Saturday's contest will feature a matchup between the top two teams in the Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll when the University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will square off against in-state rival Tennessee Tech. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (6-8, 2-1 OVC) have opened the new year on the right foot after picking up back-to-back league victories against Morehead State and Southeast Missouri in the last week. In the team's most recent outing, the Skyhawks picked up a 77-58 win over the Redhawks after placing four players in double figures and commanding the battle of the boards.
Leading the way for the Skyhawks was freshman forward Sharnecce Currie-Jelks who recorded a dominating double-double with 30 points and 13 rebounds in the victory. Currie-Jelks enters the matchup ranking fourth in the OVC in scoring (14.3 ppg), first in rebounding (7.1 rpg) and second in field goal percentage (53.1 percent).
Along with a strong performance by Currie-Jelks, UT Martin also saw two other freshmen join her in double figures along with Preseason All-OVC selection Shae Littleford. Anaya Brown scored in double figures for the fourth time in the last five games with 12 points and seven rebounds while Storey posted her second consecutive double-digit outing with 10 points and six assists. Littleford also added 16 points and six assists in the contest.
Tennessee Tech (8-5, 2-1 OVC) enters the contest winning five of the last seven games but dropped its first league contest of the season after falling to Eastern Illinois by five points on Thursday night. The OVC preseason favorites boast a well-rounded scoring attack with five players scoring over eight points a game while Maaliya Owens ranks as the only player in double figures with 12.2 points per game.
Saturday's contest marks the 78th meeting between the two programs in a series which began back in 1969. Tennessee Tech holds a historical lead in the series by a 51-26 advantage while the two programs have split the last 10 meetings – including the Golden Eagles winning both matchups last season.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and John Hatler (analyst) will have the call locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - plus a link to follow along with live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
