MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team embarks upon a three-game Ohio Valley Conference road trip when it takes on the SIUE Cougars on Thursday, Feb, 2. Tipoff time from First Community Arena is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (15-8, 7-3 OVC) are one of three teams who lead the OVC standings, joining Morehead State and Southeast Missouri. UT Martin's seven league victories are already the most for the program since 2016-17. The Skyhawks entered the week ranking in the top-20 nationally in defensive rebounds per game (28.96, seventh), rebounds per contest (39.87, 11th), fastbreak points (15.52 per outing, 12th) and scoring offense (81.5 points per game, 18th) under second-year head coach Ryan Ridder.
UT Martin is currently in the midst of its second four-game winning streak of the season and is coming off home wins over Lindenwood (66-59) and Southern Indiana (86-83 in overtime) last week. The Skyhawks were led by current OVC Newcomer of the Week Jordan Sears (24.0 points per game, including a career-best 32-point outburst against Southern Indiana) and Preseason OVC Player of the Year KJ Simon (two double-doubles to go along with 10 blocks). KK Curry also took over the OVC lead in field goal percentage (.614) after nearly averaging a double-double with 10.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest last week.
SIUE (14-9, 5-5 OVC) began the OVC slate with a 5-1 record but has dropped four straight decisions. Shamar Wright - who averaged 13.0 points in a pair of matchups against UT Martin last season - topped the Cougars with 14 points in their last game, a slim 55-50 setback at Morehead State on Saturday.
SIUE leads the OVC in scoring defense (68.4 points per game), free throw percentage (.745) and blocks (4.1 per contest). Preseason All-OVC honorees Ray'Sean Taylor (15.0 points per outing) and DeeJuan Pruitt (11.2 points and 10.6 rebounds per game in league play) pace the Cougars while Damarco Minor ranks third in NCAA Division I basketball with a .935 free throw percentage (72-for-77).
