NO. 9 SKYHAWKS FALL IN EQUESTRIAN SPRING OPENER AT NO. 8 BAYLOR

WACO, Texas – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team began its spring slate on the road today, falling by a 15-2 margin against the No. 8 ranked Baylor Bears.
Ranked No. 9 in the National Collegiate Equestrian Association poll, the Skyhawks managed one head-to-head win in flat and added another victory in reining. Julia Gilman earned her fourth win of the season with a flat score of 78 points, besting her opponent by a whopping 14 points. In reining, Kate Davis achieved her team-best fifth triumph after her 72-point performance topped her competitor by eight points.
The UT Martin trio of Haley Kane (81 points in flat), Davis (75 points in horsemanship) and Aubrey Malone (70 points in reining) also produced ties today.
The reining event is where the Skyhawks found the most success, outscoring the host Baylor squad by a 354-352 margin in raw score. Logan Putvinski managed a career-high 74-point effort but was narrowly edged by 0.5 points by her MOP competitor. Marci Leath also established a career-best score of 69.5 points while Lexi Bailey completed UT Martin's scoring with 68.5 points.
All five Skyhawk horsemanship riders accounted for solid scores but ran into some tough luck. Emma Schaefer's 74.5 points barely trailed Davis for the team lead with Paige Benson (74), Bailey (72.5) and Keely Seiter (72) rounding out the scoring.
Sophia Sundem (75 points), Rileigh Weiss (65) and Sydney Hott (no score) joined the duo of Gilman and Kane in the flat portion of the meet.
In fences, Elizabeth Becker led the way for UT Martin with 80 points as she narrowly lost by one point. Gilman and Hott each dialed up scores of 79 points apiece while Kane and Tyler Anderson followed with 78 and 75 points, respectively.
The Skyhawks are right back at it tomorrow as they square off against No. 1 ranked SMU in Dallas, Texas. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
