MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin will pursue its third Ohio Valley Conference golf title in school history as the league championships are set for Sunday, April 24 through Wednesday, April 27.
In many ways, the 2022 event is a year of firsts for the OVC Men's Golf Championships. The event is being held at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo. – marking the first time that the league championship will take place in the state of Missouri. This year's tournament also features a new wrinkle of a fourth day of match play, as the top four stroke-play teams in the league standings from the previous three rounds will battle it out for the OVC's automatic bid into the NCAA Regionals.
A pristine Nicklaus Design course, Dalhousie Golf Club will play between 6,856 and 7,154 yards for the 2022 OVC Championships. Since the par-72 course opened in 2002, Dalhousie has been ranked as the No. 1 course in the state of Missouri in four separate years and was additionally ranked 135th on the list of United States golf courses by GolfWeek in 2014.
The Skyhawks' practice round is set for 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, following a noon ceremony where the OVC will announce its postseason honorees.
The OVC Championships officially start on Sunday as UT Martin will be paired with Belmont and SIUE off Hole No. 1. Garrett Chumley will get things started for the Skyhawks at 9:40 a.m. and will be followed by Bryson Morrell (9:50), Jonathan Xoinis (10:00), Jacob Uehlein (10:10) and Tate Chumley (10:20). Sunday's forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, a high of 76 degrees, low of 55 degrees and 18 mph southwest winds.
Round 2 takes place with 18 more holes on Monday, which calls for a chance of morning rain, a high of 62 degrees, low of 43 degrees and 10 mph north winds.
The third round is set for Tuesday with forecasted sunny skies, a high of 62 degrees, low of 40 degrees and northwest winds at 11 mph. The OVC All-Tournament team and individual medalist will be recognized at the conclusion of the day.
Match play begins on Wednesday as the No. 1 seed takes on the No. 4 seed from 7:30 a.m. through 8:02 a.m. while the No. 2 seed clashes against the No. 3 seed from 8:10 a.m. through 8:42 a.m. The semifinal winners then play for the league title, teeing off from 1:00 p.m. through 1:32 p.m. Day 4 of the event calls for mostly sunny skies, a high of 66 degrees, low of 45 degrees and 6 mph northeast winds.
UT Martin enters the 2022 OVC Championships as the league's second-highest ranked team on GolfStat, winning four of its 11 tournaments this season. Austin Swafford has been a key member of both OVC championship squads in Skyhawk history, winning in 2016 as a junior student-athlete before capturing the 2021 title in his debut season as head coach.
Tate Chumley will be the No. 1 player in UT Martin's scoring lineup as the senior from Murfreesboro, Tenn. ranks 12th in the OVC with a 73.6 scoring average. He leads the Skyhawks with two individual top-five finishes, including a medalist victory at the TVA Community Credit Union Invitational on Oct. 18-19 in Killen, Ala. He will be making his fourth career OVC Championship appearance as his previous best finish came as a sophomore in 2019 (216, E, 16th place).
Slotting in at No. 2 for UT Martin is Uehlein, who narrowly trails Tate Chumley for the team lead in stroke average (73.8, 13th in the OVC). The junior out of Tullahoma, Tenn. accounted for a team-best six top-20 finishes in 2021-22 and placed 17th in his first taste of the OVC Championship last season (221, +5).
Xoinis ranks 20th in the OVC with a 74.4 scoring average as the redshirt freshman notched four top-20 tournament finishes during the regular season. The Chattanooga, Tenn. native will be making his OVC Championship debut out of the No. 3 position in the Skyhawk lineup.
Also making his OVC Championship debut will be Morrell, who will occupy the No. 4 spot in UT Martin's scoring lineup. The junior from Knoxville, Tenn. leads the Skyhawks in both par-3 scoring (3.17) and par-5 scoring (4.84) this season while piecing together a 74.5 scoring average – good enough for 24th in the OVC.
A freshman out of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Garrett Chumley is the third UT Martin representative who will be teeing it up in his first OVC Championship. Competing out of the No. 5 position in the lineup, he ranks 17th in the OVC with a 74.1 stroke average. He won the Derek Dolenc Invitational in Madison, Ill. on Sept. 27-28, securing the first of two Skyhawk medalist finishes in 2021-22.
