MARTIN, Tenn. – Back in the friendly confines of Skyhawk Field for the third straight midweek matchup, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball squad gears up for a Wednesday night tussle with SWAC foe Alabama A&M in the final date on the schedule before Ohio Valley Conference play sees its first chapter. First pitch with the Bulldogs tomorrow is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
Originally tabbed for Tuesday evening before a heavy dose of rain pushed the game back 24 hours, the Skyhawks will look to stay perfect against Alabama A&M throughout the two teams' history, holding a 7-0 record all-time approaching tomorrow's contest. Boosting their road resume against the Bulldogs to 4-0 the last time they faced off in 2020, UT Martin hopes to bump up their home record against AAMU to that exact same figure, currently at 2-3 in their own backyard in 2022.
Head coach Ryan Jenkins' unit traveled to Western Carolina last weekend for the first time in school history, taking a Game 1 victory by a 6-2 clip before back-to-back high-scoring encounters with the Catamounts veered in the other direction. Behind the meticulous work of right-handed pitcher Rhett Fetner, the Skyhawks have gained four consecutive Game 1 wins to move their overall record to 7-11 this spring.
By this point on the schedule, UTM was to have already met the Bulldogs once before. Unfortunately, inclement weather delayed that contest in Huntsville, originally due on February 22nd but postponed all the way to May 17th, which now becomes the season finale.
Instead, AAMU must settle for traveling to the Volunteer State before UT Martin comes to them, taking on the Skyhawks behind a 3-13 overall record. Coming up on the losing end of their first seven meetings before an 11-9 win over UAB in Birmingham, the Bulldogs recently picked up their second Division I victory on Saturday in their conference opener against Mississippi Valley State, 6-5.
Through the first 18 games of the semester for the navy and orange, a collective batting average of .240 brings them nearly six runs per contest. UTM has developed a penchant for powerful swings at the plate, gathering 31 doubles and 17 home runs thus far, the latter sitting as the 5th most in the OVC. Altogether, 11 different players have gone yard at least once over the course of the season's first month.
Wednesday's meeting with Alabama A&M marks the first step in a four-game home stand for the Skyhawks, who will open Ohio Valley Conference action this weekend versus Eastern Illinois once tomorrow's battle with the Bulldogs has concluded.
