CULLOWHEE, N.C. – An abundance of mid-day precipitation, coupled with continued unfavorable weather conditions throughout the rest of the evening, has effectively postponed the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team's series-opening matchup against Western Carolina, initially scheduled for Friday. Instead, the Skyhawks will engage in their third doubleheader of 2022 on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. for a pair of games with the Catamounts at Hennon Stadium.
Marking the first ever occasion that UT Martin and WCU have taken on one another, the Skyhawks bring a 6-9 overall record with them to Saturday's DH, having picked up a massive 5-2 victory over Southern Illinois at home three nights ago. Limiting the Missouri Valley Conference's offensive leader to a season-low two hits, UTM now prepares for its fourth three-game series against the same opponent, facing a Western Carolina squad that is 8-9 following Tuesday's 7-5 setback at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem.
Standing as the third time this spring that the Skyhawks meet an opposing school for the first time in UTM history – alongside Miami (Ohio) and Alabama State nearly one month ago – tomorrow's two-parter on the road and Sunday's finale will signify the last appearance before a four-game home stand next week.
In addition to Saturday's doubleheader starting at 1:00, the same can be said for Game 3 at the close of the weekend, pushed back one hour due to the Skyhawks' busy day tomorrow against the Catamounts.
