UTM BASEBALL AWAITS SECOND STRAIGHT TUESDAY MATCHUP AT HOME VS. SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
3/14/2022 7:44:00 PM | Baseball
MARTIN, Tenn. – Just 48 hours removed from a lengthy doubleheader in the state of Arkansas that produced a handful of offensive highlights, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball crew heads back to Skyhawk Field for the second consecutive mid-week appearance, playing host to Southern Illinois in the program's 38th all-time meeting with the Salukis. First pitch will occur at approximately 5:00 p.m. as the Skyhawks look to take down one of the most potent mid-major clubs in America.
Sporting an overall record of 5-9 off the heels of last Friday's shutout victory over Central Arkansas, UTM will hope to slow down an SIU squad that ranks inside the top two across 10 separate offensive categories in the Missouri Valley Conference. Leading the MVC in slugging percentage (.529), runs scored (139), hits (173), RBI (129), doubles (43), home runs (27), total bases (299), and walks (84), the Salukis have exploded out of the gates in 2022 for a record of 13-3 and a pair of lopsided victories over Western Michigan by a combined score of 19-2 on Sunday.
Tomorrow evening's non-conference date – the schools' first meeting since a three-game slate in Carbondale last March – will represent both a recent OVC and MVC Player of the Week recipient, although UTM's honoree (RHP Rhett Fetner) will likely rest for the Skyhawks' impending weekend battle at Western Carolina. On the other side of the coin, SIU's J.T. Weber received the Missouri Valley Conference POTW nod following a five-game stretch that featured 13 hits – six of which were either doubles or homers – next to nine RBI.
Not only have the Salukis been dominant on the offensive side of the field, but the SIU pitching core has been equally as noticeable through the first month of the season, ranking 2nd in the MVC in both total ERA (4.66) and opponents' batting average (.263). Sitting atop their league in batters struck out (143), Southern Illinois has held the opposition to three runs or less on seven different occasions.
With only five more matchups remaining until Ohio Valley Conference play gets started, the Skyhawks and head coach Ryan Jenkins will be searching for a statement victory while attempting to slow down an offense that has reached the double-digit run mark eight times. UT Martin accumulated 20 hits against both Creighton and UCA to close last weekend, including a trifecta of home runs from the infield unit of Casey Harford, Wil LaFollette, and Alec Beaman. Altogether, the Skyhawks have gone yard 14 times from 10 different players, ranking 5th in the OVC. Coincidentally, the navy and orange also sit in 5th place across total strikeouts, with their bullpen canning 111 batters.
