2/4/2022 6:47:00 PM | Women's Basketball
For the first time this season the University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will play an Ohio Valley Conference opponent for the second time as the Skyhawks will look to even up the season series against visiting Tennessee State after a narrow setback earlier in the campaign on Saturday, Feb. 5. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
The two teams previously met in Nashville back on Jan. 6 on a snowy afternoon in the Music City. UT Martin held the game's advantage for over 32 minutes of the contest before a wild fourth quarter featured seven lead changes and saw the score become tied six times down the stretch. Ultimately, the Skyhawks would fall just short of the road victory as a layup by Dominque Claytor with 20 seconds to play proved to be the difference as the Lady Tigers pulled out the 66-65 victory.
The Skyhawks (6-14, 3-6 OVC) picked up snapped a three-game losing streak in their most recent outing with a 70-66 win over visiting Southeast Missouri on Thursday afternoon. In yet another back-and-forth affair featuring 10 lead changes and several ties, UT Martin shot 47.3 percent from the field and forced 25 turnovers en route to the victory to jump start the final month of the regular season.
UT Martin has relied heavily on junior guard Paige Pipkin all season who leads the team in scoring with 14.4 points per game while reaching double figures in 13 contests. Sophomore Seygan Robins has also provided a big spark since returning from an injury by reaching double-digits in the scoring column in three of the last four outings – including adding 13 points in the win over Southeast Missouri. Meanwhile, freshman Shae Littleford has eclipsed 10 points in 7 of the last 9 games and scored a career-high 18 points in the last matchup against Tennessee State.
Tennessee State (11-11, 6-5 OVC) enters the matchup looking to snap out of a recent funk which has seen the team drop four of its last five contests – including a 39-point loss to Belmont on Thursday. The Lady Tigers boast a balanced offense with three players averaging in double figures led by the play of Tatyana Davis who averages 13.1 points per game – primarily off the bench. Freshman Gia Adams (12.5 ppg, 2.6 apg) and graduate Dominique Claytor (10.2 ppg, 6.3 rpg) also rank amongst the team's top scoring threats.
UT Martin leads the all-time series against Tennessee State with a 37-29 advantage with the first meeting coming back in 1979. The Skyhawks have especially been dangerous at home against the Lady Tigers, boasting a 22-8 record in games played in Martin.
Chris Brinkley will have the call live on ESPN+ as well as locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - plus a link to follow along with live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
