**Jason Simpson's Weekly Press Conference is below**
The No. 18 ranked University of Tennessee at Martin football team will hit the road once again for a matchup against Southland foe Houston Christian on Saturday, Oct. 29. Kickoff from Husky Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The contest marks the first game in a home-and-home scheduling alliance between Ohio Valley Conference and Southland Conference programs in 2022 and 2023. Announced last October, the planned collaboration will see institutions from each conference fill available non-conference dates on schedules in the next two years with a focus toward competitive balance and reasonable travel. Houston Christian will make a return trip to UT Martin in 2023.
The Skyhawks (4-3) return to their FCS schedule after squaring off against Football Bowl Subdivision foe and No. 3 ranked Tennessee last weekend. The Vols proved up to the task as the nation's best offense pulled away with a 65-24 victory. Despite the end result, the Skyhawks found success on the offensive end as the team tallied 24 points in the contest – ranking as the fifth highest scoring output against a FBS foe in program history.
UT Martin currently ranks amongst national leaders in sacks allowed (four, second), defensive touchdowns (two, seventh), passing offense (299.6, eighth), interceptions (10, eighth), turnover margin (+5, ninth), total offense (471.9, 10th), passes intercepted (3, 10th), turnovers lost (7, 15th), scoring offense (35.6, 17th), tackles for loss (6.9, 20th) and sacks (2.7, 22nd).
The Skyhawks feature three players who have been named to watch lists for national awards. Quarterback Dresser Winn has been named to the Walter Payton Award Watch List (national offensive player of the year) after racking up 2,062 passing yards and 13 touchdowns on the season. Linebacker John H. Ford II is also on the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List (national defensive player of the year) while leading the OVC in both total tackles (72) and tackles for loss (7.5). Meanwhile, running back Sam Franklin was added to the Jerry Rice Award Watch List (national freshman of the year) after tallying 423 yards and six touchdowns.
Houston Christian (2-5) enters the contest looking to snap a three-game losing streak after falling to Texas A&M-Commerce by a final margin of 31-3 last week. The Huskies average 19.0 points per game but allow 30.0 points and 443.9 yards per game to opponents. Quarterback Justin Fomby has completed 58.4 percent of his pass attempts for 1,484 yards and 11 touchdowns while throwing eight interceptions. Karl Reynolds ranks as Fomby's top target with 29 catches for 421 yards and five touchdowns. On defense, the team is led by Rodney Dansby as the squad's top tackler with 79 stops while Jalyx Hunt ranks amongst FCS leaders with 9.5 tackles for loss and 7.0 sacks.
Saturday's contest marks the first meeting between the two programs. UT Martin is 4-2 against Southland Conference foes during the Jason Simpson Era.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ while fans locally can tune into WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM to hear John Hatler (play-by-play) and Julius McNair (analyst) call the action. Those links – in addition to live stats – can be found at the top of the page.
