The University of Tennessee at Martin football team will make the cross-state trek to take on the No. 3 ranked Football Bowl Subdivision program with a matchup at Southeastern Conference leader Tennessee on Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff from Neyland Stadium is scheduled for 11 a.m. CST and will be televised nationally on SEC Network.
The Skyhawks (4-2) enter the contest ranked 14th nationally in the latest AFCA FCS Coaches' Top 25 poll while riding a three-game winning streak. The defending Ohio Valley Conference champions have posted a +17.6 point per game scoring margin against FCS opponents and rank in the top-25 in 18 team statistics, including sacks allowed (two, first), net punting (40.85, fourth), interceptions thrown (two, fifth), total offense (485.2, sixth), defensive touchdowns (two, sixth), turnover margin (+1.17, sixth), interceptions (9, seventh) and passing offense (296.8, ninth).
In UT Martin's most recent contest prior to their bye week, the squad posted a 45-16 road victory at rival Murray State. The Skyhawks racked up 691 yards of total offense in the contest while tallying five interceptions on the way to scoring 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Dresser Winn threw for 463 yards in the win while the receiving duo of DeVonte Tanksley (220 yards) and Colton Dowell (172 yards) set a new program record with 392 combined receiving yards.
Saturday's contest marks the 31st matchup for UT Martin against an FBS opponent with the team's lone win coming in 2012 against Memphis by a final score of 20-17. The Skyhawks have squared off against eight members of the SEC, including matchups against Arkansas (2015), Auburn (2008), Florida (2019), Kentucky (2014 and 2019), Mississippi State (2011 and 2014), Missouri (2018), Ole Miss (2015 and 2017) and Tennessee (2010).
No. 3 Tennessee (6-0) enters the matchup with its highest AP ranking since 2005 after a thrilling 52-49 victory over then-No. 3 ranked Alabama last weekend at home. The Vols are first team in college football history to start a season 6-0, beat four AP Top 25 opponents ranked at the time of the meeting and score at least 30 points in the first six games of a single season. The Vols currently rank in the nation's top-five statistical leaders in total offense (551.0 ypg, first), redzone offense (100%, first), scoring offense (47.7 ppg, second) and passing offense (347.8 ypg, fifth). Â
The Vols are led by some of the nation's top playmakers in quarterback Hendon Hooker and wide receiver Jalin Hyatt. Hooker has completed 70 percent of his pass attempts for 1,817 yards and 15 touchdowns while also rushing for 287 yards and three scores on the ground. Meanwhile, Hyatt has tallied 33 receptions for 595 yards and a FBS-leading 10 touchdown receptions. Defensively, Trevon Flowers leads the team with 37 tackles and two interceptions while Byron Young had a team-high 4.5 tackles for loss and 11 hurries on the defensive line.
The two programs have met once previously back on Sept. 4, 2010. Tennessee came out victorious by a final score of 50-0.
