The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team opens a season-long four-game homestand on Monday evening with an Ohio Valley Conference matchup against league co-leader Tennessee Tech on January 31. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (5-13, 2-5 OVC) are looking to close out the month of January on the right foot after going 1-5 so far through the new year. UT Martin is also hoping to right the ship and get back to its winning ways at home after posting just one win in the Elam Center this season despite posting a 126-31 record at home since 2009.
UT Martin dropped its most recent outing to Belmont on Saturday afternoon by a score of 73-48. The Skyhawks got out to a hot start by shooting 61.5 percent in the first quarter before running out of gas and struggling down the stretch by shooting 18 percent for the remainder of the contest.
The squad has relied heavily on the guard duo of junior Paige Pipkin and freshman Shae Littleford. Pipkin has led the team in scoring 11 times this season while ranking seventh in the OVC in scoring with 14.1 points per game. Meanwhile, Littleford has played a big part in the offense since joining the starting lineup by averaging 10.3 points per game while scoring in double figures in six of the last seven games.
The matchup features two of the three longest tenured head coaches in the OVC with UT Martin's Kevin McMillan (13th season, first) and Tennessee Tech's Kim Rosamond (sixth season, third). McMillan ranks third in OVC history with 245 career victories while Rosamond has posted an 83-83 mark with the Golden Eagles.
Tennessee Tech (12-7, 7-2 OVC) sits tied atop the OVC league standings with arguably the conference's most experienced starting lineup which features four preseason All-OVC selections in Mackenzie Coleman, Anna Jones, Jordan Brock (currently injured) and Kesha Brady – with three ranking as 1,000-point scorers. Coleman leads the Golden Eagles with 11.9 points per game while tallying 25 blocks. Anna Jones joins her in double figures with 11.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
Monday's game marks the 76th meeting in series history with Tennessee Tech holding a 49-26 advantage. UT Martin has held its own in recent history however, posting a 13-4 mark against TTU under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan.
