MARTIN, Tenn. – Just under one month until the first pitch is thrown on the 2022 baseball season, University of Tennessee at Martin head coach Ryan Jenkins has unveiled the Skyhawks' challenging campaign beginning in mid-February, announcing a stacked 51-game trek that will see 19 of those dates occur on UTM's home site.
Among the Skyhawks' 27 non-conference outings – starting with a three-game series in Martin versus Miami (Ohio) from Feb. 18-20 – coach Jenkins' club will await three separate opponents who advanced to the 2021 NCAA Tournament last spring, including a road trip to the defending national champion Mississippi State Bulldogs in early April.
Boasting 27 returning players next to 14 newcomers awaiting the fifth season with coach Jenkins helming the program, UT Martin will battle 15 different schools representing 10 conferences outside the OVC before league play begins on March 25th. Following the three-game set against the Redhawks to pull back the curtain on the season post-Valentine's Day, UTM will embark on an eight-game road sequence all in the state of Alabama, featuring a Tuesday night tussle with the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa on the first evening of March.
The next three home dates for the navy and orange will all take place with one week in between each other, hosting one-off contests against Illinois State (March 8), Southern Illinois (March 15), and Alabama A&M (March 22). As each team prepares for eight series against Ohio Valley Conference competition, the Skyhawks will see an even split across those meetings with four at home and four away from it.
Eastern Illinois (March 25-27), Austin Peay (April 8-10), Tennessee Tech (April 22-24), and Belmont (May 6-8) will all visit UTM's campus for three-game slates in 2022. Meanwhile, the Skyhawks themselves will travel to SIUE (April 1-3), Murray State (April 14-16), Morehead State (April 29-May 1), and reigning OVC Tournament champion Southeast Missouri (May 13-15) to accommodate the rest of the league schedule, the latter of which will serve as the regular season finale.
Other important one-and-done dates for the Skyhawks in the middle of OVC territory include an April 20th home appearance vs. Christian Brothers, a visit to Middle Tennessee on April 26th, a neutral battle with Memphis on May 3rd in Millington, Tenn., and the team's third duel with a Southeastern Conference foe in the form of Kentucky on May 10th from Lexington.
UTM's visit to Starkville on April 5th will mark the first time in coach Jenkins' tenure that the Skyhawks will face off with the defending NCAA champion, having also taken on eventual runner-up Vanderbilt last season and nearly coming away with the victory over the #1 team in the country at the time, finding a 5-4 setback in the end.
Knocking off two ranked opponents in 2021 – a 9-4 win at #22 Alabama and a 9-7 triumph over #11 Ole Miss in Oxford – the Skyhawks finished last spring with an overall record of 19-29 alongside a 10-17 mark against OVC squads. Returning utility player Wil LaFollette captured All-OVC Freshman team status last year, while the UTM pitching core landed a 5.24 ERA, the best mark in school history since joining the NCAA's Division I ranks in 1993. UT Martin will begin the 2022 journey off the heels of an immensely-successful statistical year, with last season's unit ranking in the top five all-time in school history in home runs (2nd place at 58), pitching strikeouts (3rd place at 413), saves (4th at 8), and fielding percentage (5th at .963).
Only two weeks after facing UK on the road, the Skyhawks will aim to return to the state of Kentucky for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, held at the Lexington Legends Ballpark from May 25-28. The top eight teams from the final league standings will advance to the postseason in a double-elimination format.
