CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The 2021 University of Tennessee at Martin beach volleyball season began with a bang this afternoon as the Skyhawks posted a pair of 3-2 road triumphs over Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay.
With the win in today's first match, UT Martin won in its OVC debut. For good measure, the Skyhawks tacked on a victory in the second match of the day although the result does not count towards the league standings.
Individually, UT Martin swept the decisions out of the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 slots today. Both matches came down to the Skyhawks' clutch No. 2 tandem of Kayla Carrell and Karen Scanlon while the duos of Haeleigh Paulino/Logan Wallick (No. 3) and Addison Conley/Jessica Reynolds (No. 4) also went undefeated on the day.
During the first matchup, the team of Conley and Reynolds ensured that UT Martin got off to a good start, taking the opening point with a 21-16, 21-16 win. The Skyhawks' No. 5 pairing of Baillie Kearns and Lauren O'Neill nearly came away with a win but was outlasted 23-21, 19-21, 15-9.
Paulino and Wallick scored a 21-10, 21-15 victory at No. 3 before UT Martin's No. 1 team of Lucy Kaufman and Hannah Phillips fell by a 21-15, 21-10 margin.
That set up a winner-take-all matchup at No. 2 as Carrell and Scanlon passed with flying colors, generating a 21-14, 21-16 win.
The Skyhawks found themselves in an 0-1 hole in the second match after the No. 5 squad of Kearns/Olivia Lucia battled but fell in a tight 22-20, 21-19 decision. Conley and Reynolds evened the match at 1-all after a gutsy 15-21, 21-17, 15-7 come-from-behind victory at No. 4.
A convincing 21-16, 21-8 win by Paulino and Wallick at No. 3 nudged UT Martin ahead by a 2-1 margin but the Governors evened things up as Kaufman and Phillips were defeated 21-15, 25-23 at No. 1.
The deciding No. 2 matchup went into a tiebreaking third set but Carrell and Scanlon wrapped up their perfect day behind a 21-10, 21-23, 15-5 triumph.
The Skyhawks will now head to Anniston, Ala. for a two-day, four-match tournament hosted by Jacksonville State. UT Martin will take on OVC rivals Morehead State (9 a.m.) and Jacksonville State (5 p.m.) on Saturday, April 17 before facing Eastern Kentucky (8 a.m.) and Chattanooga (12 p.m.) on Sunday, April 18.
