
#1 UT MARTIN AND #2 BELMONT SET FOR TITLE GAME SHOWDOWN ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT OVC BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The top-seeded University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will look to win its fifth Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship crown on Saturday, March 6 when squaring off against league rival and second-seeded Belmont in the tournament finals. Tipoff from the Ford Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (20-4) are playing in their fourth consecutive title game and ninth in the past 11 seasons on Saturday afternoon. UT Martin has won four tournament titles in program history – stringing together four consecutive championships in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. UT Martin has posted a 21-7 mark in tournament action under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan since the 2010-11 season while boasting a 4-4 record in championship contests.
UT Martin has won 10 OVC championships under the direction of McMillan – the 2021 OVC Coach of the Year – including six regular season titles (2011-12, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2019-20, 2020-21) and four OVC tournament crowns (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014). His 10 titles lead all active OVC basketball coaches - men or women - by five. Belmont's Bart Brooks ranks second in the league with five.
This contest pits two of the league's most dominant teams over the past decade. Between UT Martin and Belmont, the two programs have combined to win outright or share 10 regular season titles since 2011-12 while winning eight of the last tournament championships.
These two programs finished first and second not only in the standings but in several statistical categories this season. UT Martin led the OVC in scoring defense (56.7 ppg), field goal percentage (46.7), field goal percentage defense (35.6), three-point field goal percentage (38.3) and assists (16.9). Meanwhile, Belmont ranked first in scoring offense (72.2 ppg), scoring margin (+15.2), steals (11.1), turnovers margin (+4.9), assist/turnover ratio (1.2) and three-pointer field goals made.
Saturday's game marks the 39th meeting in the all-time series with Belmont holding a 24-14 advantage. The Skyhawks won the lone regular season meeting in Martin back on Jan. 26 by a final score of 66-63. The two squads have previously met five times in the OVC tournament while this marks the fourth title game matchup joining championship games in 2014, 2018 and 2019.
