3/4/2021 5:44:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The top seeded University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will square off against fifth seeded Tennessee Tech in the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship presented by Kentucky Wild with a semifinal matchup on Friday, March 5. Tipoff from the Ford Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
UT Martin (19-4) is making an appearance in the tournament semifinals for the fifth consecutive season after picking up a 65-56 victory over eighth-seeded Eastern Illinois in the quarterfinals on Wednesday afternoon. The Skyhawks earned a season sweep of the Panthers to improve to 20-8 in the tournament field under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan since 2010.
After earning her first All-OVC honor and her second OVC Player of the Week accolade of the season earlier this week, sophomore Dasia Young put on a show in Wednesday's quarterfinal matchup against Eastern Illinois. Young led all players in both scoring and rebounding with her third double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 rebounds. She also tied the program's single-game free throw record by knocking down 16 free throw attempts from the charity stripe to tie Jasmine Newsome (twice) and Tessa Fields. Along with the program record, it set an OVC Basketball Championship record – surpassing the previous mark set of 14 set by Tessa Field (1998) and Emanye Robertson (2019).
Fifth-seeded Tennessee Tech (15-9) is making its second semifinal appearance in the last three years after knocking off the four seed Jacksonville State 79-64 on Thursday. Four different Golden Eagles scored in double figures led by the play of All-OVC performer Jordan Brock with 23 points. Mackenzie Coleman also tallied 19 points while fellow All-OVC honorees Keisha Brady (12 points) and Anna Jones (10 points) rounded out the group in double figures.
This marks the 75th meeting between the two programs in a series which dates back to 1969. While Tennessee Tech leads the all-time series 49-25, UT Martin has won 14 of the last 17 meetings. The two programs have met eight times in the OVC Basketball Championship with each team winning four matchups – including three straight meetings in the title game from 2011-13 with the Skyhawks coming out victorious.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley will be on the call locally on WCMT Radio 1410 AM/100.5 FM. Those links - in addition to a link for live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
