MARTIN, Tenn. – The defending Ohio Valley Conference regular season champion University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team opens play in the 2021 Women's National Invitation Tournament with a Memphis Regional matchup against Big Ten foe Nebraska on Friday, March 19. Tipoff from My Town Movers Fieldhouse in Collierville, Tenn. is scheduled for 11 a.m.
The WNIT Memphis Regional site will allow 100 guests per team. Tickets will not be available to purchase for the general public. All games will be streamed by FloHoops, available here: https://bit.ly/3sJSgny.
UT Martin has qualified for the postseason 10 times in the program's 29-year Division-I history. This marks the Skyhawks sixth berth in the Women's NIT as the team competed in the event in 1999, 2015, 2016 and 2018 while earning an automatic bid to the postseason tournament before its cancelation last season.
The Skyhawks (20-5) recently won the program's seventh OVC championship with a 17-2 league mark. UT Martin posted its third straight 20-win season after leading the league in several statistical categories including scoring defense (56.7), field goal percentage (46.7), field goal percentage defense (35.6), three-point field goal percentage (38.3) and assists (16.9).
UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan is 238-141 in his 12 seasons at the helm of the Skyhawks. McMillan claimed his fourth OVC Coach of the Year honor this season after leading his team to its 10th championship crown – six regular season and four tournament titles – during his tenure.
Highlighting the squad is the senior pair of Chelsey Perry and Maddie Waldrop which are looking to put the finishing touches on their decorated careers. Perry recently earned her second consecutive OVC Player of the Year honor and enters the tournament averaging 22.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Waldrop (9.8 ppg, 6.3 rpg) was named to the OVC Basketball Championship All-Tournament team after averaging 14.0 points and 6.7 rebounds over the three-game event.
Nebraska (12-12) is one of eight Big Ten Conference programs to advance to the postseason while going 9-10 in league play. The Cornhuskers feature second-team All-Big Ten guard Sam Haiby who led the team in scoring (17.3 ppg), assists (4.5 apg) and steals (1.2 spg) while adding 6.9 rebounds per game. The team also features honorable mention All-Big Ten selections Isabelle Bourne (13.9 ppg, 7.8 rpg) and Kate Cain (10.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2.9 bpg).
Friday's contest marks the second meeting in the all-time series against Nebraska with the Huskers winning the previous matchup 69-60 back on Dec. 7, 2004. UT Martin is 2-4 all-time in the WNIT with the program's last win coming in the 2016 tournament field against Memphis.
The game will be streamed live on FloHoops (pay-per-view) with Greg Gaston doing play-by-play. Both on the radio and streamed online, Chris Brinkley will broadcast the game on Mix 101.3 FM and through the Thunderbolt Radio app. Those links - in addition to live stats - can be found at the top of the webpage.
