SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – For the fourth time in six games this season, the University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team held its opponent in the 40's on the scoreboard but the Skyhawks ultimately fell 46-37 to George Washington in their first of two games in the San Juan Shootout.
UT Martin (3-3) held the Colonials to just 26.2 percent shooting (16-of-61), forcing 13 turnovers in the process. However, George Washington outscored the Skyhawks by 15 points from beyond the three-point arc (eight treys to three) to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Hayley Harrison put together one of the best all-around performances of her young career for UT Martin today. The freshman from Winchester, Ky. amassed a game-best 11 points while setting career-highs in rebounds (six), assists (four), steals (three) and minutes played (36).
Paige Pipkin (seven points, two steals) was the next highest scorer for the Skyhawks while Holly Forbes equaled a team-high with six rebounds.
The Colonials were led by Kyara Frames and Faith Blethen, who each scored 10 points. Tyasia Moore snared a game-high 14 rebounds to help George Washington claim a 19-0 advantage in second-chance points.
Neither side scored in the first 2:38 but the Colonials grabbed a 6-0 lead soon afterwards. The first three-pointer of Gabi Melby's career and a pair of Shanice Simpson-Whiteley free throws whittled UT Martin's deficit to 6-5 at the 4:39 mark but George Washington ended the first quarter on a 15-3 run to go ahead by a 21-8 margin.
The Skyhawks started the second quarter with seven unanswered points, starting with a Shae Littleford layup for her first collegiate bucket. Forbes pumped in four straight points before a layup by Kyannah Grant on a backdoor cut made the score 21-15 with just under seven minutes to go in the period. Harrison tacked on a triple late in the quarter as UT Martin got within seven points (26-19) at the halftime break thanks to a 7.1 percent (1-of-14) shooting effort from the Colonials.
Littleford's four points paced the Skyhawks as UT Martin displayed incredible balance with seven players scoring in the opening half. Blethen's seven points guided George Washington.
Pipkin drained a three-pointer for the Skyhawks' first points of the second half, making the score 28-22 less than a minute in to the third quarter. The Colonials were responsible for 13 of the next 15 points before a Simpson-Whiteley layup at the 1:22 mark ended UT Martin's scoring drought. Grant added a free throw 52 seconds later to make the score 41-27 at the end of the third period.
The Skyhawks clawed back within seven points in the fourth quarter – holding George Washington to 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from the field – but ultimately it wasn't enough. Harrison scored UT Martin's first six points of the period before converting a tough layup that cut the Skyhawk deficit to 44-37 at the 4:08 mark. However, that would be the last UT Martin field goal of the contest.
Tomorrow wraps up the Skyhawks' participation in the San Juan Shootout as UT Martin clashes against No. 24 Virginia Tech at 9 a.m. CST.
