After a brief appearance in front of the squad's home fans last weekend, the University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team returns to life on the road with a two-game appearance in the San Juan Shootout this weekend. The Skyhawks will face off against Atlantic-10 foe George Washington on Friday, Nov. 26 at 11:15 a.m. before facing No. 24 ranked Virginia Tech on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 9 a.m. with all time CST. Contests will be broadcast live on FloHoops.
The Skyhawks (3-2) enter the tournament as winners of three of their last four contests with victories over North Carolina A&T, Western Kentucky and Illinois State. In the team's most recent outing against Illinois State last Saturday, UT Martin led for over 36 minutes in the contest before a pair of free throws by Seygan Robins with 1.3 seconds to play secured the 54-52 win.
UT Martin is led offensively by graduate forward Holly Forbes who paces the team with 11.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Forbes has been rewarded for her strong play to start the season by earning a pair of OVC Newcomer of the Week honors. Junior Paige Pipkin has also been impressive by leading the team in scoring in three games this season – including a season-high 17 points against Illinois State – while averaging 11.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
George Washington (3-2) has won back-to-back outings with narrow victories over Old Dominion (47-45) and Quinnipiac (54-50). The Colonials are led offensively by Mayowa Taiwo who averages 10.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while Aurea Gingras (8.2 ppg) and Tyasia Moore (8.0 ppg, 8.8 rpg) rank as the team's other top contributors.
Virginia Tech (5-0) is unbeaten on the season and ranks 24th in the AP Top 25 while posting an average margin of victory of 36.6 points. The Hokies have three players averaging in double figures, led by the play of Elizabeth Kitley with 20.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Aisha Sheppard (16.8 ppg) and Kayana Traylor (11.2 ppg) also sit amongst team leaders offensively while Georgia Amoore ranks eighth nationally with 33 assists.
This is UT Martin's first appearance in the San Juan Shootout. UT Martin and George Washington have not met previously, while the Skyhawks and Hokies will meet for the second time in series history. Virginia Tech won the lone previous matchup 87-55 back on Dec. 28, 2002.
