BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The initial Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Cup standings for the 2021-22 season were revealed today and the University of Tennessee at Martin sits atop the 10-team field.
Through the end of the league's fall championship season, the Skyhawks' 36.5 points lead the standings by a point over Southeast Missouri (35.5). Tennessee Tech's 33.5 points rank third while Murray State (31.5) and Belmont (31) round out the top-five. Eastern Illinois (28.5), Morehead State (23), Austin Peay (22.5), SIUE (18.5) and Tennessee State (9.5) complete the standings.
Five UT Martin athletic programs have chipped in points so far, led by OVC regular season champion Skyhawk football (10) and soccer (9.5) squads. Men's cross country (seven), volleyball (six) and women's cross country (four) have also contributed to UT Martin's early-season success.
Created in 2008-09, the OVC Commissioner's Cup is a symbol of overall athletic excellence in Conference-sponsored championships and is awarded annually to one member institution. Schools are required to count point totals for four main sports (football, volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball) along with their next eight highest point totals from the remaining sports, regardless of gender.
For most sports, the first-place team earns 10 points, the second-place team is awarded nine points, etc. For rifle, men's indoor track, men's outdoor track and beach volleyball – which do not have eight participating teams – the first-place team earns 10 points and each subsequent place earns points less than the total number of teams in the OVC divided by the number of teams that sponsor that sport.
The OVC releases updated Commissioner's Cup standings at the end of the fall and winter championship seasons. The final results are revealed following the spring championships.
The Skyhawks' best finish in the chase for the OVC Commissioner's Cup came in 2011-12 and 2020-21, placing seventh in both years. The Skyhawk record for points in a single academic year is 89, established during the 2016-17 campaign.
