MARTIN, Tenn. – Cameron Holden, a 6-5, 200-pound wing out of Gulf Coast State College in Panama City, Fla., has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball program.
Holden, who helped lead GCSC to the 2020 Florida College System Activities Association state championship after scoring 1,049 points over a two-year span, will be a junior for the Skyhawks in the 2020-21 season.
"Cameron is a warrior and a fierce competitor who wills his team to victories," UT Martin head coach Anthony Stewart said. "He's the consummate team player and is a high-character individual who was a highly sought after recruit. He's versatile and has the ability to play multiple positions – he has a motor that doesn't stop."
A Forsythe, Ga. native, the high-scoring Holden is coming off two very successful seasons at the junior college level. He was named the 2020 FCSAA Tournament Most Valuable Player after helping the Commodores knock off three nationally ranked squads on their way to the Florida state title and the school's first berth in the NJCAA Tournament since 1972, tying for the program's most wins (24) in 47 years.
Holden led the entire state of Florida in scoring in league play with 23.4 points per outing under head coach Phillip Gaffney in 2019-20, chalking up NJCAA Region VIII all-state and All-Panhandle Conference first team honors. Overall, he ranked in the FCSAA's top-three in scoring (20.2 points per game, second), rebounding (10.2 per game, second), free throws made (149, second) and field goals made (208, third). He also ranked fourth nationally with 134 offensive rebounds (4.5 per game) and ranked second on his squad in three-point field goals made (41), assists (3.0 per contest), steals (2.0 per game) and blocks (0.6 per contest) as a sophomore.
Last season, Holden scored at least 25 points on 10 different occasions – including four 30-plus point performances. The best game of his career came in a win at Northwest Florida State on Jan. 4 as he accumulated career-highs of 41 points and 17 rebounds. Five days earlier against Monroe College, he went off for 35 points on 13-of-14 shooting – including a perfect 6-of-6 effort from three-point range. He also displayed an innate knack to get to the charity stripe, as he made double-digit free throws in four separate games (including a 13-of-15 performance as part of a 30-point showing against Georgia Highlands on Nov. 14).
Holden nabbed 17 double-doubles in 2019-20, hauling in at least 15 rebounds in five different games. He handed out a career-best nine assists in a win at Lurleen B. Wallace on Dec. 3 and had 19 multi-steal performances, swiping a career-high five steals on three separate occasions.
As a freshman, Holden led the Commodores in scoring (15.3 points per game), rebounding (6.1 per game), assists (2.2 per game), steals (1.2 per game), field goals made (147) and free throws made (129) under head coach Jay Powell.
Holden piled up seven games with at least 20 points and a pair of 30-point outings as part of the 2018-19 campaign. His season-high of 34 points at Tallahassee on Jan. 5 included a remarkable 22-of-31 effort from the free throw line – setting the school record for free throw makes in a single game. He was responsible for six double-doubles and seven multi-steal performances.
On the prep level, Holden was a Georgia Athletic Coaches Association all-state performer in Class 4A for head coach Greg Nix at Mary Person High School. He helped the Bulldogs to a 23-5 record during his senior year, averaging 28.2 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.9 steals and 1.7 blocks per outing. That came after he averaged 26.0 points and 11.0 rebounds during his junior campaign in 2016-17.
For his four-year varsity career, Holden amassed 2,043 points, 780 rebounds, 352 assists, 280 steals and 162 blocks over 102 games played at MPHS.
UT Martin's 2020-21 signing class currently consists of Holden, sophomore Eden Holt (Houston, Texas/Williston State College), freshman Ksuan Casey (Madisonville, Ky./Madisonville-North Hopkins HS) and junior Jaron Williams (Rock Hill, SC/College of Central Florida).
