MARTIN, Tenn. – Through the end of the 2019-20 academic year, we will be posting a season recap for each University of Tennessee at Martin athletic program. This edition of the "Skyhawk Season in Review" series features the beach volleyball team.
The abbreviated 2020 UT Martin season was well on track to be the best in school history, as the Skyhawks roared out to four victories in their first five matches. UT Martin's four wins during the season-opening 10-match Spring Break trip through the state of Florida were already more than the program tallied in its first two seasons combined as it transitioned into varsity status.
Overall, the Skyhawks emerged victorious in 24 of their 50 head-to-head matchups. UT Martin excelled at the No. 5 slot in 2020, winning each of its first six decisions of the season before wrapping up the year with a 7-3 record in that position.
The Skyhawk trio of Addison Conley, Haeleigh Paulino and Jessica Reynolds each led the way with team-highs of six wins while Paulino's .667 winning percentage as a freshman ranked as the best mark on the squad.
In addition to the above three players mentioned, Kayla Carrell, Lucy Kaufman, Kayla Long and Hannah Phillips each generated head-to-head records of .500 or better on the season.
Kenzie Hinshaw and Karen Scanlon spent a majority of time occupying the No. 1 position for UT Martin, racing out to four wins in their first five decisions. Gintare Mackeviciute and Jamie Rys also saw extensive time at the No. 1 spot, as that duo joined forces to win three of their first five decisions while leading the squad with a pair of wins at No. 2.
Zoe Merriweather became the sixth player to make her Skyhawk beach volleyball debut in 2020 as UT Martin will look to carry over its early season success into next spring.
