MARTIN, Tenn. – University of Tennessee at Martin senior Kaitlin Korinek will compete for a national championship this weekend as the 2020 NCAA Rifle Championships take place in Lexington, Ky. on March 13-14.
Korinek and Skyhawk head coach MJ Vowell departed campus at 9:30 a.m. today to make the 300-mile drive to the University of Kentucky, the host site of this year's event. Korinek is expected to attend open registration and a voluntary equipment check this afternoon at Memorial Coliseum before a welcome dinner event this evening.
Thursday will start with air rifle practice at Memorial Coliseum from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. EST, followed by a mandatory coaches meeting. The official NCAA Championships banquet will take place that evening at the host hotel in Lexington.
While the NCAA Rifle Championship begins on Friday with the smallbore competition, Korinek will not be in action until the air rifle portion of the event on Saturday.
The doors at Memorial Coliseum will open at 8:30 a.m. local time on Saturday. The first relay's call to the line is set for 9:45 a.m. with prep/sighters following at 10 a.m. The first competition is scheduled for 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. Relay No. 2 will begin with an 11:45 a.m. call to the line, prep/sighters at noon and the competition to take place from 12:15 through 1:30 p.m.
Saturday's individual finals timeline includes a 2 p.m. call to the line, 2:15 p.m. prep/sighters and the competition lasting from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. An awards ceremony will be conducted following the completion of the finals.
Korinek has had a little over two weeks to prepare for the 2020 NCAA Championships after she was selected as one of just four at-large air rifle qualifiers on Feb. 25. The Irwin, Pa. native averaged a 586.3 air rifle score during the 2019-20 campaign, collecting her seventh career All-Ohio Valley Conference award. She is one of only six Skyhawks to ever earn an at-large berth into the NCAA Championships field.
