The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will close out a brief homestand with a matchup against Ohio Valley Conference foe Jacksonville State on Saturday, Feb. 8. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The game serves as Alumni Day as past players will be recognized at halftime of the contest. Immediately following the conclusion of the contest, the Skyhawks will retire the jerseys of UT Martin Hall of Famers Heather Butler and Jasmine Newsome. Butler made history by becoming the all-time leading scorer in OVC and UT Martin history with 2,865 career points while becoming the first player in league history to make a WNBA roster. Meanwhile, Newsome ranks second in the OVC with 2,566 career points while garnering two OVC Player of the Year and three OVC Defensive Player of the Year honors.
The Skyhawks (14-8, 10-1 OVC) are riding a four-game winning streak and sit in first place in the OVC standings after securing a 71-62 victory over Tennessee Tech on Thursday night. In a game that featured 12 lead changes, the Skyhawks held the Golden Eagles scoreless in the final three minutes to pull away late. The junior post duo of Chelsey Perry (37 points and eight rebounds) and Maddie Waldrop (19 points and 12 rebounds) combined to score 56 of the team's 71 points.
Jacksonville State (10-12, 6-5 OVC) is coming off a sizable setback at Southeast Missouri on Thursday night, falling on the road 79-52. The Gamecocks are led by head coach Rick Pietri who tallied his 100th career victory at JSU in a win over Belmont last weekend. The duo of Destiney Elliott (12.1 ppg) and Taylor Hawks (12.0 ppg) leads the way for the Gamecocks.
Saturday's matchup marks the 37th meeting between the two programs in a series which dates back to 1983. UT Martin holds a narrow 19-17 margin in the all-time series but has won 11 straight against Jacksonville State dating back to the 2011-12 season.
