
SKYHAWKS TO HOST 2020 OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIP THIS WEEKEND

MARTIN, Tenn. – An Ohio Valley Conference champion will be crowned on the University of Tennessee at Martin campus this weekend as the Skyhawks proudly play host to the 2020 OVC Championship on Feb. 8-9.
This marks the fifth time that the OVC Rifle Championship has taken place at the Skyhawk Rifle Range, as UT Martin also hosted the event in 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2012. The Skyhawks will join Jacksonville State, Morehead State and Murray State as teams to vie for the conference title.
The OVC Rifle Championship officially gets underway with the smallbore portion of the event on Saturday, Feb. 8. A total of three relays are set to take place, starting at approximately 8:45 a.m. and followed by relays around 11:45 a.m. and approximately 2:45 p.m.
On Sunday, Feb. 9, an OVC champion will be determined following three air rifle relays which will occur around 8:45 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. The 2020 All-OVC teams and the official presentation of the championship trophy will take place during an awards presentation in Alumni Gym after the conclusion of the event (approximately 3:30 p.m.).
Murray State has won 14 overall OVC titles, including each of the last four championships. Head coach Alan Lollar oversees a roster that has averaged a 4,657 aggregate, including a season-best score of 4,678 against Jacksonville State on Jan. 18.
Coached by Ron Frost, Jacksonville State is in search of its 10th OVC championship this weekend. The Gamecocks boast an average aggregate score of 4,633 and posted a season-high aggregate of 4,654 points on Nov. 2 against The Citadel and North Georgia.
Morehead State is coming off its season-best score over the weekend, piling up 4,667 points against Georgia Southern on Jan. 31. Head coach Alan Joseph has guided the Eagles to a 4,626 average aggregate score during the 2019-20 campaign.
The Skyhawks carry a 4,577 average aggregate into the league championship with third-year head coach MJ Vowell at the helm. UT Martin's season-high score of 4,622 took place against Morehead State on Nov. 3.
