MARTIN, Tenn. – Junior Abbie Hopkins carried over her success from yesterday as the University of Tennessee at Martin standout captured both MOP's in a 9-1 triumph over SUNY New Paltz.
About 24 hours after she went 2-for-2 in the Jumping Seat discipline against No. 6 SMU (including an MOP in fences), Hopkins excelled again today. The Seekonk, Mass. native dialed up 88 points in fences – 12 points more than any other competitor in the event – and secured 78 points (eight more points than the next-highest score) in flat. As a result, she received her second MOP of the season in both events.
As a team, UT Martin swept the flat event and tacked on four more victories in fences. The win improved the No. 10 ranked Skyhawks to 3-6 on the season.
Joining Hopkins in the win column in flat was Quinn Reed (70 points), Kelby Kane (67), Haley Kane (66) and Julia Gilman (65). UT Martin's average margin of victory in flat was 9.6 points per rider.
Kelby Kane's 83 points, Tyler Anderson's 76 points and Grace Rogers' 72 points were all good enough for wins to join Hopkins as victors in fences. The Skyhawks won their matchups by an average of 13 points per competitor.
UT Martin puts the finishing touches on the regular season next Saturday, Feb. 29 when it travels to Athens, Ga. for matchups against Delaware State and current No. 5 Georgia.
