MOBILE, Ala. - The Skyhawks fell just short as they faced off against last years Big Ten champions in the South Alabama Invitational.
Â
Â
Starting from the beginning, the University of Tennessee at Martin's baseball team was in a battle to the end with the University of Indiana. The Hoosiers struck first against senior RHP Winston Cannon. After two outs had been recorded, Cannon allowed a solo shot to left field. His resilience to the home run was impeccable as Cannon got out of a bases-loaded jam shortly after in the first.
Â
Â
Cannon found his stride and started to showcase the reason he is the Skyhawks ace. The next few innings were his playground. He decided the outcome of it all, and in the end, the Hoosiers went away scoreless until he left the game in the fifth inning.
Â
Â
While the Skyhawks starter danced around the Indiana batters, the offense got it going in the fourth. Per usual, it was the newcomers showcasing their talents in tough situations. Freshman Christian Hall started the scoring for UT Martin after he singled to left field to score junior Andruw McKenzie. Two batters later, Houston Wright brought senior Sean Dixson home after a double down to right field line to make it 2-1 in favor of the Skyhawks.
Â
Â
The Hoosiers took the two back in the top of fifth to make the score 3-2. That score stood for the remainder of the game as Indiana's pitching stopped UT Martin from making an moves at changing the score.
Â
Â
UT Martin got the chance to make their statement as they entered into the bottom half of the ninth. They quickly got bases loaded with no outs, but failed at any attempts after the fact. This lead to the Skyhawks falling to the Hoosiers 3-2.
Â
Â
UT Martin will have little time to wait till the next game as they face South Alabama tonight at 6:30 p.m.
Â
Â
Game Notes- Christian Hall led all hitters with two hits and one RBI. Hall led the team in batting average and produced his third straight multi-hit game... Houston Wright also went 2 for 4 with an RBI... Only two pitchers touched the ball in this game as Winston Cannon threw four innings, and senior David Hussey threw the other five.
