
UT MARTIN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HEADS TO NO. 5 LOUISVILLE FOR SEASON OPENER

The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will finally open the 2020-21 season after a 274-day hiatus from competition with a road matchup at No. 5 ranked Louisville on Sunday, Dec. 6. Tipoff from the KFC Yum! Center is scheduled for 11 a.m. CST and will be televised nationally on the ACC Network.
The Skyhawks (0-0) open the season looking to looking to build upon another championship campaign after boasting a 22-10 record and the program's sixth Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship. UT Martin returns 13 players from last year's squad while welcoming two newcomer to a team which received votes in the Preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll and opened the season ranked 10th in the Preseason Mid-Major Poll.
UT Martin is highlighted by the senior All-OVC first team post tandem of Chelsey Perry and Maddie Waldrop. Perry has received numerous preseason accolades which including being named to some of the most prestigious watch lists – including the Naismith Trophy, McClain Award and Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award. The All-American ranked third nationally with 23.1 points per game last season while scoring in double figures 69 times in her career. Waldrop is also a force, averaging 12.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game last season while boasting 18 career double-doubles.
Skyhawk head coach Kevin McMillan enters his 12th season at the helm of the program where he has boasted a 218-132 record. Under the direction of McMillan, UT Martin has posted a seven 20-win season, won five OVC titles and notched eight postseason berths.
Louisville (3-0) enters Sunday's matchup ranked fifth nationally in both polls following an explosive 116-75 win over DePaul on Friday evening in which the team posted a program single-game record for points scored. The Cardinals are highlighted by All-American and ACC Player of the Year Dana Evans who averages 18.3 points and 6.7 assists per game. Currently four Cardinals are averaging 17 points or more per game as Evans joins Kianna Smith (21.0 ppg), Hailey Van Lith (18.0 ppg) and Olivia Cochran (17.0 ppg) on the offensive juggernaut.
Sunday's matchup marks the 10th meeting between the two programs. Louisville holds a distinct advantage, winning all nine previous matchups. The two squad's last meeting came in Martin last season with the Skyhawks pushing the sixth-ranked Cardinals to the brink before ultimately falling 71-63 in double-overtime.
