MARTIN, Tenn. – Just three days after a thrilling double overtime victory in its season opener, the University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball team faces its first road test when the Skyhawks travel to No. 5 ranked Illinois on Saturday, Dec. 5. Tipoff from the State Farm Center will take place at 8 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
UT Martin (1-0) led for nearly 44 minutes of game time on Wednesday against Evansville, withstanding a late rally in regulation to claim the contest by a 93-87 margin. It marked the first double overtime game for the Skyhawks since an 82-71 home triumph over Eastern Illinois on Jan. 19, 2017.
Eden Holt dialed up a game-high 24 points against the Purple Aces, which was the fourth-best scoring tally in UT Martin history for a player making his Skyhawk debut in a season opener. Cameron Holden (16 points, team-best eight rebounds), Jaron Williams (11 points) and Eman Sertovic (10 points) also reached double figures in the scoring column as Montez Robinson earned his first victory as UT Martin's interim head coach.
This game will serve as a homecoming of sorts for Skyhawk junior guard Jonte Coleman, who starred at Champaign Central High School. He secured all-conference honors for the Maroons as a senior in 2017-18 and began his collegiate career at Kankakee Community College before joining UT Martin this fall.
The Fighting Illini (3-1) are coming off their first setback of the early season, dropping an 82-69 decision against No. 2 Baylor as part of the annual Jimmy V Classic in Indianapolis on Wednesday. Junior guard Ayo Dosunmu compiled a team-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists in a game that featured 14 lead changes and 10 ties.
Dosunmu's 95 points this season lead all NCAA Division I players while Kofi Cockburn - the reigning Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year - ranks first nationally with three double-doubles so far during the 2020-21 campaign.
Lisa Byington (play-by-play) and Robbie Hummel (color) will provide the commentary on the Big Ten Network. Links to listen to the Illinois radio broadcast and to follow along with live stats can be found above.
