The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will look to cap off a successful road trip with a matchup at Ohio Valley Conference foe Morehead State on Saturday, Feb. 1. Tipoff from Johnson Arena is scheduled for noon CST and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (12-8, 8-1 OVC) capped off the month of January by winning eight of nine games and sits in a first place tie atop the league standings after securing a 65-50 road victory at Eastern Kentucky on Thursday night. Despite a rough shooting performance, the Skyhawks held the Colonels to under 40 percent shooting from the floor while commanding the battle of the boards. The Skyhawks boasted a balanced scoring performance with two players scoring in double figures while six players scored at least five points.
Junior Chelsey Perry ranks as the league's top scorer averaging 22.0 points per game. Perry ranks fifth nationally in points per game and sixth in blocks. She recently snapped a streak of eight straight games with at least 20 points against EKU after tallying 15 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.
Morehead State (8-13, 4-5 OVC) enters the contest having dropped three of its last four contests. The Eagles dropped their most recent contest against Southeast Missouri by a score of 67-61 on Thursday night in a game which Morehead State trailed by 25 points in the fourth quarter before stringing together a 27-8 to cut the deficit but ultimately dropped the home contest. Freshman Ariel Kirkwood would flirt with a demonstrative triple double with 25 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocks in the loss.
The Eagles boast three scorers averaging in double figures in Breuna Jackson, Jazzmyn Elston and Kirkwood. Jackson leads the team with 11.1 points per game while Elston (10.9 ppg) and Kirkwood (10.2 ppg, 8.7 rppg) round out Morehead State offensively.
Saturday's contest marks the 52nd matchup between the two programs in series history. Morehead State leads the series with a 28-23 mark while picking up four consecutive regular season victories dating back to the 2016-17 season. The Skyhawks did snap the losing streak in the OVC Basketball Championship semifinals last season, knocking off the No. 2 seeded Eagles 66-58.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. The action will also be broadcast on WCMT 100.5 FM / 1410 AM with Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Alex Boggis (analyst) bringing the radio call. Links for video, audio and live stats are located at the top of the webpage.
