MOREHEAD, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team put an exclamation point on a strong road trip with a decisive 82-64 road victory at Ohio Valley Conference foe Morehead State on Saturday afternoon.
The Skyhawks (13-8, 9-1 OVC) picked up their first road win at Morehead State since 2016 behind a strong shooting night and impressive individual performances. After trailing heading into the second quarter, UT Martin strung together an 8-0 run and never looked back by stretching the team's margin out to as high as 25 points in the fourth quarter.
UT Martin shot 53.6 percent from the field while making 17-of-19 free throw attempts. The Skyhawks also forced 20 turnovers which led to 27 points while recording 13 steals.
Leading the way for the Skyhawks was the play of junior forward Maddie Waldrop who scored a career-high 26 points while tallying nine rebounds in the victory. Junior guard Tamiah Stanford chipped in 17 points and five assists off the bench while forward Chelsey Perry scored 14 points in just 24 minutes of action.
"This was a really physical game and Morehead State is a dangerous team when they are making shots," UT Martin head coach Kevin McMillan said. "We faced some adversity with foul trouble, but it actually saw us take a step I wanted us to see. When Chelsey went out with two or three minutes left in the third quarter with foul trouble, we not only built the lead but pushed it out to where it needed to be. I have wanted to see us build our leads and we did that. I like the things we did. If we can get more consistent we have a chance down the stretch."
Morehead State (8-14, 4-6 OVC) shot 43.9 percent from the field while winning the battle of the board. Two different Eagles scored in double figures led by Tomiyah Alford with 17 points and nine rebounds while Ellie Joe Johnson tallied 16 points and six rebounds in the setback.
UT Martin will return home for three of its next four contest, beginning with a matchup against OVC co-leader Tennessee Tech on Thursday, Feb. 6.
