The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team is set for a heavyweight clash of Ohio Valley Conference leaders on Thursday, Feb. 6 when playing host to league co-leader Tennessee Tech. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+. In addition to the contest, the game serves as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night.
The Skyhawks (13-8, 9-1 OVC) head into the matchup tied atop the league standings with Tennessee Tech in the first of two regular season matchups against the Golden Eagles. UT Martin has won three straight heading into Thursday's matchup after dropping its lone OVC contest to Eastern Illinois back on Jan. 23. Since then the Skyhawks have posted three sizeable victories with an average margin of victory of 24.3 points per game, including an 82-64 victory over Morehead State their last time out.
UT Martin relies heavily on its junior forward duo of Chelsey Perry and Maddie Waldrop to carry the load on both ends of the floor. Perry was recently named one of 10 semifinalists for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award after ranking fifth nationally with 21.6 points per game while ranking amongst OVC leaders in rebounds, blocks and minutes played. Waldrop also ranks amongst OVC leaders in scoring (15.2 ppg), rebounds (8.6 rpg) and blocks (1.0) after an impressive performance in her last contest with 26 points and nine rebounds.
Tennessee Tech (16-5, 9-1 OVC) ranks in the Women's Mid-Major Top 25 after an impressive start to the season. The Golden Eagles recently saw their 11-game winning streak come to a halt at the hands of defending OVC champion Belmont last week for their lone loss in league play. Historically known as one of the top programs in OVC history, Tennessee Tech has claimed a staggering 18 league titles but is looking to snap a seven-year title drought (2012-13).
The Golden Eagles boast a three-headed monster with three players averaging in double figures led by junior Kesha Brady with 15.6 points per game. The duo of Mackenzie Coleman (11.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg) and Jordan Brock (10.7 ppg) round out the scoring trio.
Thursday's matchup marks the 72nd meeting between the two longtime foes in a series which dates back to 1969. Tennessee Tech holds a commanding 46-25 lead in the series but UT Martin has controlled the series as of late, winning 10 of the last 12 meetings since 2011.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. The action will also be broadcast on WCMT 100.5 FM / 1410 AM with Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (analyst) bringing the radio call. Links for video, audio and live stats are located at the top of the webpage.
