The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will open the second leg of the squad's four-game road trip with a push through the Bluegrass State and a matchup at Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, Jan. 30. Tipoff from McBrayer Arena is scheduled for 4 p.m. CST and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (11-8, 7-1 OVC) currently sit one game out of first place in the league standings while winning three of their last four road contests with the team's lone setback coming last Thursday at Eastern Illinois (74-70). During league play, UT Martin has scored an average of 79.0 points per game while posting an average margin of victory of 18.6 points.
In the team's most recent matchup at SIUE, the Skyhawks shot 50 percent from the field while picking up a 40-point victory – the team's largest margin of victory on the road in program history. The win also improved the Skyhawks to 134-42 (76.1 percent) in OVC under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan and 166-34 (83.0 percent) when scoring 70 points or more.
UT Martin junior forward Chelsey Perry continues to make waves as one of the nation's most complete players on both ends of the floor. Perry heads into Thursday's matchup in the top-10 in six statistical categories. She ranks second nationally in field goals made (163), third in points (425), fifth in points per game (22.4), sixth in blocks (59), ninth in blocks per game (3.11) and 10th in field goal attempts (324). In league play alone, she ranks in the top-10 in points (27.3 ppg), rebounds (9.4 rpg), blocks (4.1 bpg) and minutes played (34.4). Fellow junior Maddie Waldrop also ranks in the top-10 in scoring (14.6 ppg), rebounds (8.4 rpg) and blocks (1.0 bpg).
Eastern Kentucky (8-11, 2-6 OVC) enters the contest looking to overcome back-to-back road losses last week at Jacksonville State (68-54) and Tennessee Tech (87-82). The Colonels are under the direction of first-year head coach and former longtime Louisville assistant Samantha Williams.
EKU has struggled to score in OVC play with just 54.0 points per game but Teri Goodlett has led the team in league play with 14.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game – including a 20-point performance against OVC-leader Tennessee Tech her last time out.
Thursday's meeting marks the 56th meeting between the two programs in a series which dates back to 1974. Eastern Kentucky holds a 31-24 advantage in the series but UT Martin has controlled the narrative of late, winning 14 of the last 15 contests with the lone setback coming on Jan. 7, 2016.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. The action will also be broadcast on WCMT 100.5 FM / 1410 AM with Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Alex Boggis (analyst) bringing the radio call. Links for video, audio and live stats are located at the top of the webpage.
