MARTIN, Tenn. - Its been almost seven months since the University of Tennessee at Martin's baseball team has seen live game action. Now that February is on the horizon, practice is starting up and January shivers are depleting, the Skyhawks are starting their advance to improve on their 2019 campaign.
Ever since coach Ryan Jenkins started dawning that UT Martin orange and blue, he has sparked improvement. Last year the Skyhawks, set a school record for the most wins in a season since joining Division I with 25 victories. Now going into his third year of coaching the Skyhawks, he is coming in with an almost blank slate. The UT Martin baseball team graduated 15 seniors last May, now 22 freshman and junior college transfers are coming in to fill those spots.Â
While youth will play a pivotal role in UT Martin's success, it's the returners that will define the season. Last year, the Skyhawks had two players that were honored as All-OVC selections. Outfielder Jordan Stoner hung up his cleats and joined the coaching staff. However, junior RHP Nick Wohlbold is ready to allow UT Martin to win by finishing games strong. Wohlbold was a second-team All-OVC selection as he led the OVC in saves with 13 and finished with a 3.09 ERA. Joining Wohlbold as a veteran leader is junior infielder Casey Harford, Harford leads all returning Skyhawks with a .312 average and a .356 on-base percentage in his 2019 campaign.
The Skyhawks are just 21 days from live game action as they start their season against St. Louis University Feb. 14-16 in Birmingham, Ala.
