BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For just the third time in University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball history, a Skyhawk has won Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week accolades four times in a season as Parker Stewart earned that status today.
Stewart, who also won the award on Nov. 18, Nov. 25 and Dec. 2, joins Lester Hudson (five times in 2008-09) and Brian Foster (four times in 2000-01) as the only UT Martin players to nab at least four OVC Newcomer weekly honors in a single season.
A 6-5, 200-pound guard out of Union City, Tenn., Stewart averaged 26.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game as the Skyhawks split against Tennessee State and Belmont. Eight of his 16 field goals made came from three-point land while he also added a .750 free throw percentage (12-of-16) for the week.
During Thursday's win over Tennessee State, Stewart pumped in a game-high 31 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Two days later, he provided 21 points, five rebounds and five assists in a narrow setback to Belmont.
Stewart currently leads the OVC in scoring (24.0 points per game) and ranks third in assists (4.8 per game) in league play. Overall, he also tops the league in three-point field goals made (3.2 per game) and ranks third in minutes played (35.8 per game).
UT Martin hosts both OVC co-leaders this week at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center, closing out a four-game homestand against Murray State (7:30 p.m. on Thursday) and Austin Peay (4 p.m. on Saturday).
