MADISON, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team put the finishing touches on a masterful two-day performance today, nabbing its first team win of the season at the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational held at Gateway National.
The Skyhawks ended the event with an aggregate score of 852 (E), becoming the only squad in the 18-team field to shoot even-par or better. UT Martin shot a 289 (+5) during today's third round, finishing six strokes ahead of second-place Tennessee Tech for its first tournament win since April 9-10, 2018.
"Today wasn't the prettiest but we are so proud to get the win," Skyhawk assistant coach Austin Swafford said. "We faced some adversity today and that's a good thing – we haven't had many challenges so far this season like we had out there this morning. Our guys were patient, hung in there and grinded it out – that was good to see and we can definitely build off that. Like I said yesterday, this was a total team effort and that's what got it done for us in the end."
UT Martin was led today by Mason Chandler, who carded a 70 (-1) that included four birdies and 11 pars. Jack Story was 3-under through 12 holes today before settling on a 72 (+1) while Nick Wolf shook off a slow start to post three birdies on his way to a 72 (+1). The Skyhawk team scoring was rounded out by Jacob Uehlein's 75 as the freshman knocked in both of his birdies on the back-nine.
Tate Chumley posted an 81 (+10) today while Bryson Morrell (two birdies) accounted for a 73 for the second straight round as an individual.
Overall, Story and Wolf tied for eighth place in the field of 99 golfers, as each Skyhawk shot an even-par 213 for the tournament. It was Story's third top-10 finish in as many attempts in 2019-20 and Wolf's fourth career top-10 effort.
Chandler finished just outside the top-20 with his 217 (+4) while Chumley followed closely behind with a 218 (+5). The freshman duo of Uehlein and Morrell notched final tallies of 222 (+9) and 224 (+11), respectively.
UT Martin is back in action next week when it hosts the annual Skyhawk Fall Classic at Paris Landing State Park in Buchanan, Tenn. The 2019 edition of the tournament is set for Monday, Sept. 30 and Tuesday, Oct. 1.
