UT MARTIN TO OPEN 2019 FOOTBALL SEASON AGAINST NORTHWESTERN STATE ON THURSDAY

The University of Tennessee at Martin football team will officially open the regular season with a matchup against Southland Conference member Northwestern State on Thursday, Aug. 29. Kickoff from Hardy M. Graham Stadium is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
The Skyhawks (0-0) open their 91st season of football and 28th as a Division I program in 2019. Overall, UT Martin is 4-9 in season openers under the direction of head coach Jason Simpson but have posted an 11-2 record in home openers during the same time frame.
UT Martin is looking to rebound from a 2-9 campaign in 2018, ranking as the first losing season for the Skyhawks since 2011 and the first season sub-.500 year in conference play since 2004.
The Skyhawks boast eight players who have earned preseason all-conference honors by various publications, including the trio of seniors Julian Crutchfield, Austin Pickett and Terry Fultz which each garnered Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference recognitions. Overall, the Skyhawks return 13 starters plus two key specialist for a squad which was picked to finish seventh in the OVC.
Returning for his 14th season at the helm of the Skyhawks, head coach Jason Simpson possesses a career record of 80-68. Simpson ranks as the OVC's seventh winningest coach and needs just one victory to move into a tie for sixth on the league's leaderboard with Tennessee Tech's Don Wade.
Northwestern State (0-0) features 17 returning starters from a squad which went 5-6 and finished eighth in the Southland Conference. The Demons are highlighted by all-conference honorees Hayden Bourgeois, Chris Zirkle, O'Shea Jackson and Myles Ward along with quarterback Shelton Eppler was named to the CFPA FCS National Performer of the Year Trophy watch list.
Thursday's contest serves as the third meeting between the two programs with the series tied at one game apiece. UT Martin picked up a win in 1965 before Northwestern State recorded the equalizer in 1967.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM to hear Tom Britt (play-by-play), Chris Brinkley (color), John Hatler (color) and John Abel (sideline) provide analysis. WUTM, UT Martin's award-winning student radio station, will also broadcast the game on 90.3 FM.
