MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team battled the Jacksonville State Gamecocks as well as the rain in today's narrow 4-2 loss.
UT Martin (19-26, 7-15 OVC) was led at the dish by the big bat of Ethan Whitley. The Mason, Tenn. native connected for just one hit but it was a moon shot to left field that plated a team-best two runs. Blake Davis paced the Skyhawks in hitting on the day as he tallied a pair of knocks. Sean Dixson and Tyson Cox also rapped out hits for the club in the contest.
Austen Bullington (3-7) drew the starting nod and tossed 5.1 innings of solid baseball. He conceded one earned run on four hits and a trio of walks but fanned three in his time on the mound. David Hussey came on for two innings of relief and allowed one earned run on a pair of knocks. He sat down a squad-high four batters on strikes during the game. Jeff O'Doherty logged 1.2 innings of work and held the Gamecocks scoreless as he did not allow a hit nor a walk while he whiffed a Jacksonville State batter.
Bullington came out firing on all cylinders as he needed just 10 pitches to cruise through the opening frame of play. He induced a fly out bookended by a pair of groundouts to make quick work of the Gamecocks. In the second inning, Bullington required 11 pitches this time around to sit down Jacksonville State in order. He forced a fly out to left for the first out, a pop out to third base for the second out and ended the frame on a groundball out to short.
The Gamecocks pushed a pair of runs across the plate in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, Bullington opened the frame with a fly out to right field before issuing a four-pitch free base to the next batter and conceded a bunt single to the following batsman. However, he kept his composure to ring up the next two batters on swinging strikeouts to get out of the inning unscathed. Bullington worked around a leadoff walk in the fifth inning to force a sacrifice bunt to the next batter and found a friendly fly ball to right for the second out. He finished off the frame with another swinging strikeout to keep Jacksonville State scoreless in the inning.
Over the course of the sixth and seventh innings, the Gamecocks plated one run per frame to make the score 4-0.
Hussey entered the contest in the sixth needing to get a pair of outs and did just so as he recorded both via the punchout.
In the eighth, Hussey fanned the first batter of the frame before O'Doherty rung up the next batter and found a friendly groundball to first base to end the inning.
The Skyhawks tallied a pair of runs in the eighth as Davis poked a single through the left side. Later, Whitley issued his two-run blow to left field to inch UT Martin back by a 4-2 margin.
The Skyhawks continue their series with Jacksonville State tomorrow as first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
