UT MARTIN WOMEN’S HOOPS SET FOR OVC TOURNAMENT SEMIFINAL SHOWDOWN AGAINST MOREHEAD STATE
3/8/2019 1:04:00 AM | Women's Basketball
For the ninth time in the past 10 seasons, the No. 3 seed University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team advanced to the Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Championship semifinals to matchup against No. 2 seed Morehead State on Friday, March 8. Tipoff from the Ford Center is tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m. and will be aired on ESPN+.
UT Martin (22-8) and Morehead State will meet for the second time this season. With both teams finishing the regular season tied for second place with 13-5 marks in league play, it is only fitting that the two squads will meet in the OVC Championship semifinals with a finals berth on the line. While history shows that Friday marks the Eagles first semifinal appearance since the 2010-11 season, UT Martin has nearly made it a habit, advancing to the semifinal round nine times in the last 10 years – with the lone exception coming in 2016. Overall, the Skyhawks are 16-6 in OVC Championship play dating back to 2010 while notching a 5-1 record in games played in the Ford Center.
The Skyhawks advanced to the semifinals with a dominating performance in the first round against No. 6 seed Murray State, cruising to a 77-56 victory. UT Martin shot 50 percent from the floor while All-OVC forward Chelsey Perry led the squad with 20 points. Meanwhile, the guard tandem of All-OVC senior Emanye Robertson and sophomore Zaire Hicks chipped in 19 points each while combining for 14 assists and 10 rebounds.
Morehead State (23-9) boasts an explosive squad which notched a seamless victory against No. 7 seed Jacksonville State on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles are a veteran squad which features 11 upperclassmen – including five seniors and a graduate transfer. The squad boasts three All-OVC selections Miranda Crockett (first team), Aliyah Jeune (first team) and Mckenzie Calvert (second team). Crockett ranks as the OVC's leading scorer at 18.4 points per game while Jeune ranks sixth (16.2 ppg) and Calvert ranks 11th (12.8 ppg).
Friday's matchup will mark the 51st meeting between the two program's dating back to the series inauguration in 1993. Morehead State owns a 28-22 record in the series while winning three straight over the previous two seasons. UT Martin has however owned the tournament matchups, winning three of the four meetings since 2002 on a neutral floor.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM to hear Tom Britt (play-by-play) and Chris Brinkley (color) provide analysis.
