MARTIN, Tenn. – Fresh off a hard-fought victory in its 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Championship debut last night, the No. 7 seed University of Tennessee at Martin men's basketball squad will try to carry that momentum into its quarterfinal matchup against No. 3 seed Jacksonville State. Tipoff from the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. is set for 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 7.
The Skyhawks (12-18) knocked off sixth-seeded Eastern Illinois on Wednesday, placing five scorers in double-figures. Jailen Gill muscled up for the fifth double-double of his two-year UT Martin career with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds while Derek Hawthorne, Jr. also chipped in 17 points off the bench.
With last night's win, Skyhawk head coach Anthony Stewart improved to 2-1 in OVC Tournament games, tying former head coach Bret Campbell (1999-2009) for the most OVC Tournament victories in school history. UT Martin is now 6-12 all-time in the league tournament with half of those wins coming since 2016.
The Skyhawks have won two straight over the Gamecocks, having not lost to Jacksonville State since March 4, 2017. That setback occurred in the OVC Tournament championship game as the No. 4 seed Gamecocks upset the No. 2 seed UT Martin team by a 65-55 margin. The 2017 matchup is the only time these two programs have squared off in the OVC Tournament.
Earlier this season at the Elam Center, the Skyhawks limited Jacksonville State to just 26 points in the second half en route to a 66-64 victory. Quintin Dove's 21 points led all scorers as UT Martin outscored the Gamecocks by an 8-2 margin over the final 2:18 in a game that featured 22 lead changes and 14 ties.
Jacksonville State (23-8) enters on a seven-game winning streak, defeating its opposition by 11.4 points per game during that span. Jason Burnell (first team) and Marlon Hunter (second team) each captured All-OVC honors earlier this week for a Gamecock team that ranks seventh in the nation in rebounding.
This game can be seen live on ESPN+ while Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Tom Britt (color) will have the radio call locally on WCMT 1410 AM/100.5 FM.
