MARTIN, Tenn. – The first ever University of Tennessee at Martin beach volleyball home matches were played today as the Skyhawks dropped back-to-back 4-1 decisions to Southern Miss.
          Â
A crowd of 332 gathered at the newly built Skyhawk Beach Volleyball Complex to witness history being made. On the day, four of the 10 decisions went into tiebreaker third sets – three of which came during the opening match of the day.
          Â
"We're really excited to finally play on our own home courts," UT Martin head coach Jaclynn Wilson said. "We had a great crowd – it's just a very laid-back atmosphere and a lot of action going on. We had a lot of good matches and our girls played hard. We still have a lot of learning to do and a lot of work to do to have the success that we want but we are seeing a lot of good things."
          Â
In the first match, Kenzie Hinshaw and Karen Scanlon pushed through for a big 21-18, 21-19 victory at No. 2. Each of the other four matchups were tight but ultimately went the way of the Golden Eagles.
Â
At No. 5, Addison Conley and Logan Wallick won the first set before falling 18-21, 21-18, 15-12 while Megan Fair and Justine Walker also took the opening stanza at No. 3 but dropped an 18-21, 21-18, 15-10 decision. The third pairing to go into three sets was at No. 4 where Lindsey Geurin and Jessica Reynolds battled but fell 21-12, 18-21, 15-8. At No. 1, Brooke Gyori and Hannah Phillips were defeated by a 21-12, 21-15 margin.
Â
The Skyhawk duo of Fair and Walker were bumped up to No. 2 for the second match of the double dual and the results worked out as UT Martin claimed a 25-23, 10-21, 15-13 triumph. However, that would be the only matchup where the Skyhawks emerged victorious.
Â
Gyori/Phillips and Conley/Wallick fell by identical scores of 21-13, 21-13 at No. 1 and No. 5, respectively. At No. 3, Hinshaw and Scanlon fought but fell 21-11, 21-14 while Geurin and Reynolds were defeated 21-11, 21-9 at No. 4.
Â
UT Martin has over two full weeks off before its next outing, which is a double dual on the road at Central Arkansas on March 28.
