
UT MARTIN BEACH VOLLEYBALL EARNS FIRST WIN IN PROGRAM HISTORY ON OPENING DAY OF TAMPA TOURNAMENT

TAMPA, Fla. – Head coach Jaclynn Wilson and the University of Tennessee at Martin beach volleyball program picked up their first-ever victory today, defeating Eckerd College to cap off a long first day of a tournament hosted by the University of Tampa.

The Skyhawks knocked off Eckerd by a 3-2 margin this afternoon, which came after a 5-0 setback to Tampa in the season opener this morning. All in all, six different UT Martin players scored a victory today.

"It was really good for us to get out there and not only compete but to win our first match in school history today," Wilson said. "The team showed no signs of first-match jitters and played at a high level throughout both matches. I couldn't be more proud of our team for bringing home a win on the first day of the season."

UT Martin generated victories at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 against Eckerd. The No. 2 tandem of Megan Fair and Justine Walker outlasted their opponents by a score of 21-15, 16-21, 15-7. At No. 3, Kenzie Hinshaw and Karen Scanlon tallied a 21-9, 21-13 victory while Lindsey Geurin and Jessica Reynolds joined forces at No. 4 for a 21-8, 21-16 win.

Brooke Gyori and Hannah Phillips represented the Skyhawks at No. 1 but were narrowly defeated by a 21-19, 21-15 margin. UT Martin was forced to forfeit its No. 5 matchup, relinquishing a point to Eckerd.

Against Tampa, the Skyhawks kept things close but could not break through for a win. The No. 4 team of Geurin and Reynolds came the closest as the duo pushed their matchup to three sets before falling 21-18, 5-21, 8-15.

UT Martin's No. 3 pairing of Hinshaw and Scanlon nearly broke through before falling 21-19, 21-17. At No. 5, Addison Conley and Logan Wallick competed throughout but were defeated by a 21-11, 21-16 margin. Gyori and Phillips battled but dropped a 21-13, 21-13 decision at No. 1 while the No. 2 team of Fair and Walker fell by scores of 21-9, 21-13.

The Skyhawks complete their participation in the tournament on Saturday, March 2. UT Martin will square off against Coastal Carolina at 7 a.m. CST before taking on Jacksonville at 1 p.m. CST.
