MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball squad is set to travel to the Peach State to take on Kennesaw State this weekend. First pitch on Friday, March 1 is scheduled for 3 p.m. CST. With a doubleheader now scheduled for Saturday beginning at noon CST.
UT Martin (3-4) is coming off of an impressive showing against No. 10 ranked Ole Miss as the Skyhawks dropped a tough 12-6 decision but struck early and often against the Rebels.
Leading the way for UT Martin is the red-hot bat of Jordan Stoner who paces the club in batting average (.393), on-base percentage (.876), slugging percentage (.464) and is tied for the lead in stolen bases with a pair on the year. Blake Davis is coming off of an impressive outing against Ole Miss as he finished a day a triple short of the program's first cycle and also collected the Skyhawks' first dinger of 2019.
The UT Martin pitching staff is coming off of a record-setting weekend as it tallied the program's first-ever back-to-back shutouts as the Skyhawks put together consecutive 1-0 wins in the first two games against North Alabama. Right-handed pitcher Winston Cannon (1-1, 5.23 ERA and team-high 11 strikeouts) is set to toe the rubber in the Friday night matchup. Righty Austen Bullington (0-1, 11.05 ERA and nine strikeouts) looks to take the mound in Game 1 on Saturday while southpaw Sam Folks (1-0, 1.54 ERA, squad-best 0.80 WHIP and seven strikeouts) will get the starting nod in the series finale. The duo of Jeff O'Doherty (0-0, 0.00 ERA and 10 strikeouts) and Nick Wohlbold (0-0, 0.00 ERA, two saves and six strikeouts) have been key pieces to the UT Martin bullpen thus far.
Kennesaw State (4-3) is led by Garrett Hodges (.407 batting average, two home runs, impressive 1.183 OPS, five stolen bases and team-best nine RBIs) while David Chabut (squad-high .474 batting average, 1.124 OPS and two stolen bases). Jaylen Smith has also provided the club with a reliable bat as he sports a .345 batting clip with three doubles on the season. As a whole, the Owls have been given the green light on the base paths as they have swiped 16 bases on 18 attempts.
Looking to start for the Owls on Friday evening is righty Brooks Buckler (0-0, 2.25 ERA and 10 strikeouts). Right-handed pitcher Ryan Kennedy (2-0, 3.60 ERA and squad-best 12 strikeouts) will take the hill on Saturday in Game 1 with lefty Josh Coburn (1-0, program-leading 2.16 ERA among starters and 11 strikeouts) looks to toe the rubber in Game 2.
