SKYHAWK WOMEN’S HOOPS TO WEAR PINK AND “PLAY4KAY” AGAINST SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
2/12/2019 4:27:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The University of Tennessee at Martin women's basketball team will Play4Kay and raise awareness for women's cancers with an Ohio Valley Conference matchup against Southeast Missouri on Thursday, Feb. 14. Tipoff from the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The "pink phenomenon" in women's basketball began during the 2004-2005 basketball season, when Coach Kay Yow's cancer recurred after being in remission for 17 years. Play4Kay is the grassroots fundraising initiative of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. For the past eleven years, numerous sports, groups, and organizations have hosted Play4Kay fundraisers that resonated with their fans and the community. Play4Kay events allow members of the basketball community to play a part in the Kay Yow Cancer Fund simply by doing something they love, playing ball.
The Skyhawks (16-7, 8-4 OVC) enter the contest looking to cap off a season-long three-game homestand on a high note after snapping a 16-game home winning streak dating back to last season their last time out to Tennessee Tech. Despite the loss, a pair of Skyhawks had standout performances. Sophomore Chelsey Perry scored a season-high 28 points for the Skyhawks – including knocking down five three-pointers – while senior guard Emanye Robertson tallied her first career double-double with 10 points and 13 assists in the contest.
Southeast Missouri (11-12, 6-6 OVC) enters the contest having the opposite results as the Skyhawks a week ago, defeating Tennessee Tech (62-53) but losing to Jacksonville State (56-39). The Redhawks are led in scoring by sophomore Tesia Thompson – who missed the previous matchup - with 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Meanwhile Carrie Shephard ranks second on the team with 9.1 points per game while leading the offensive attack in the two team's previous meeting with 25 points – including seven three-pointers.
Thursday's contest marks the 69th meeting between the two programs with UT Martin holding a 38-30 series advantage. The Skyhawks have also won 18-of-19 games against the Redhawks under the direction of head coach Kevin McMillan. When the two teams met earlier this season, UT Martin overcame an 18-point deficit in the third quarter to notch an 80-73 road victory on Jan. 5.
The game will be streamed live on ESPN+. Fans can also tune into WCMT 1410 AM, 100.5 FM, 92.7 FM, 96.1 FM, 99.7 FM and 103.3 FM to hear Chris Brinkley (play-by-play) and Eddie Suiter (color) provide analysis.
