11/7/2019 10:30:00 AM | Rifle
MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time this season, the University of Tennessee at Martin will host an opponent in the Skyhawk Rifle Range as Ohio Valley Conference rival Morehead State pays a visit to campus this weekend.
The match will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9 and will feature the smallbore portion of the match. The action continues at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10 as the two sides will complete the air rifle segment of the match. All spectators are welcome to attend the relays on Sunday.
This match will also mark the official debut of UT Martin's new electronic targets, as the Skyhawk Rifle Range underwent a substantial state-of-the-art upgrade over the summer.
The Skyhawks are on the verge of clicking on all cylinders as the squad has essentially steadily increased their aggregate scores throughout the first five matches of the season. That improvement was continued with a 4,622-point effort at Morehead State last Sunday – showing a 31-point improvement from their season-opener at Memphis on Sept. 21.
Seven-time All-OVC honoree Kaitlin Korinek has led UT Martin in aggregate scores twice this season while 2019 OVC Freshman of the Year Rachel Sprague has also recorded team-best tallies on two different occasions. Arguably the hottest current Skyhawk is Jennifer Plocinik, as the redshirt junior from Lehighton, Pa. shattered three career-highs over the weekend at Morehead State while leading UT Martin on Sunday with 1,161 points.
Sprague's 575 season average in smallbore leads the way for the Skyhawks in 2019-20. Korinek (571), Plocinik (569), Jacob Osborne (561) and Tristan Grisham (557) round out the top-five average scorers in smallbore.
UT Martin's air rifle squad has been paced by Korinek's 587 average. Sprague (585), Plocinik (582), Osborne (568) and Nick Fares (568) also have shown consistency in the air gun for the Skyhawks so far in 2019-20.
