JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The No. 6 seed University of Tennessee at Martin volleyball squad battled today in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship quarterfinals but No. 3 Murray State proved to be too much in a 3-0 Skyhawk setback (22-25, 20-25, 19-25).
Logan Wallick and Karen Scanlon each tallied a team-best eight kills for UT Martin while Scanlon hit .389 with four digs and three blocks. Kenzie Hinshaw distributed 27 assists with five digs and three blocks while Lucy Kaufman (team-high 13 digs) and Justine Walker (team-best five blocks) for the Skyhawks.
Scanlon provided a pair of kills and a block assist to help UT Martin take a 4-2 lead in the first set. The Racers (19-10) briefly took a lead before four unanswered points by the Skyhawks resulted in a 14-11 UT Martin advantage. Back-to-back kills by Addison Conley kept the Skyhawks on top by a 17-15 margin but Murray State responded with a 5-0 surge. A kill by Gintare Mackeviciute helped UT Martin fend off set point but the Racers soon took a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Skyhawks led early in the second set thanks in large part to back-to-back Wallick kills. The score was eventually knotted at 10-10 but Murray State unspooled seven consecutive points to force a UT Martin timeout. Hinshaw followed with a service ace and Wallick added another kill to cap off a 3-0 spurt. Scanlon, Conley, Mackeviciute and Wallick each tallied kills down the stretch as the Skyhawks closed to within three points at 23-20. However, the Racers collected back-to-back kills to go ahead by a 2-0 margin.
A pair of block assists and kills from Wallick and Scanlon led to a 4-2 UT Martin advantage to start the third stanza. Murray State generated six straight points as part of a 9-1 run before a Wallick kill temporarily halted the Racer momentum. Another 7-2 Murray State run followed before a Conley kill highlighted a stretch where the Skyhawks scored four out of five points. Mackeviciute and Wallick added kills late as UT Martin pulled to within five points but the deficit was too large to overcome.
The Skyhawks conclude the 2019 campaign with a 13-19 overall record, finishing in the top-five of the OVC standings with the program's first winning season in league play since 2011. Mackeviciute and Hannah Phillips both played in their final collegiate matches today, as each earned All-OVC honors in their UT Martin career. Mackeviciute compiled 479 kills and 194 blocks in two years as a Skyhawk while Phillips dialed up 597 kills and 402 digs over four seasons.
