BLYTHEWOOD, SC – The No. 9 ranked University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian squad rounded out its fall schedule this afternoon, coming up short by a 15-4 margin at No. 4 South Carolina.
The Skyhawks earned a pair of victories today in both the horsemanship and flat events. UT Martin also posted a tie in reining but could not come away with a win in fences.
In horsemanship, Bailey Newlin picked up her second consecutive victory of the 2019-20 season with a team-best 73 points. Devon Woods also extended her winning streak out to three as she earned 71 points on her way to the victory. Lucy Eier (70 points), Tess Baumann (69) and Paige Benson (68.5) also represented the Skyhawks in the event.
Abbie Hopkins won her fourth straight decision in flat, as her 75-point performance was good enough for a dominant 19-point margin of victory. Also earning a win in her collegiate debut was freshman Mahalia Alascio, who edged out her opponent with a 67-66 triumph. Kelby Kane equaled a season-high with 79 points but ran into some tough luck while Quinn Reed (75) and Randi LaChance (57) additionally competed for UT Martin in flat.
Noel Meadows' team-high 69 points in reining resulted in a tie for the Skyhawks. UT Martin posted solid scores all-around as Baumann (66.5), Brooke Bradley (66.5), Emily Zegiestowsky (66) and Hannah McDonald (65.5) completed the Skyhawks' scoring lineup.
UT Martin also recorded respectable scores in fences but were unable to emerge victorious. Grace Rogers came the closest to a victory after she went off for a career-high score of 81 points but came up just two points shy of the win. Kane's 74, Hopkins' 72, Savannah Metheny's 69 and Tyler Anderson's 67 rounded out the scoring in that event.
The Skyhawks will take nearly three months off from official competition before resuming its season. UT Martin travels to Fresno, Calif. to take on UC Davis on Feb. 7 before squaring off against Fresno State on Feb. 8.
