TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Tennessee at Martin cross country teams put the finishing touches on a strong season at the NCAA South Regional Championships on Friday morning at Apalachee Regional Park.
Going head to head against some of the top competitors in the nation, the Skyhawks held their own. UT Martin's women's team finished 17th in the region – climbing four spots over last season's finish – while the men placed 16th.
Reigning Ohio Valley Conference Athlete of the Year, junior Alexis Grandys led all league competitors in the field to pace the Skyhawks with a 39th place finish in the 6k field with a time of 21:08.2 for a new personal-best. Ranking second for the Skyhawks was freshman Erica Fisher who crossed at 21:55.0 followed by senior Agok Ayuen at 22:35.8. Rounding out the scoring-five was junior Lydia Lee (23:10.9) and senior Natalie Motor (23.25.1). The senior pair of Ayuen and Motor would both go out in style, posting PRs in their final cross country meet of their respective Skyhawk careers.
On the men's side in the 10k race, junior Alex Schell led the Skyhawks with a time of 31:49.8 while fellow junior Daniel Smith was close behind at 32:11.1. Senior John Payne posted a time of 32:35.6 to finish third for the squad while Tim Dye (32:45.0) and Lenny Baumann (32:47.9) wrapped up the scoring group for UT Martin. The strong performances by the Skyhawks saw each of the five scorers for the men's squad post new PRs.
