MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team makes its Eastern College Athletic Conference debut this week as the Skyhawks play host to South Dakota State at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10 and No. 10 Delaware State at 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 11.
This brief homestand closes out a busy three-plus week start to the season for UT Martin, as the Skyhawks have already faced No. 1 Auburn and No. 3 Oklahoma State at home before traveling to Miami (Ohio) for an exhibition last Friday.
UT Martin will look to build off its momentum from the victory over Miami (Ohio), as the Skyhawks captured all four MOP's in a 13-11 decision. Tyler Anderson (fences), Julia Gilman (flat), Natalie Armstrong (horsemanship) and Hannah McDonald (reining) each secured MOP accolades for UT Martin in that competition.
In the Jumping Seat discipline, the Skyhawks have been paced by Abbie Hopkins so far in 2019-20. The junior from Seekonk, Mass. is responsible for UT Martin's only wins in both flat and fences, as she earned both of those head-to-head victories against Oklahoma State on Sept. 20.
Quinn Reed and Randi LaChance are tied for the Skyhawk lead in average flat scoring (78.5) while Kelby Kane paces UT Martin with a 78.0 scoring average in fences this season.
The Skyhawks have earned three victories in the Western discipline in 2019-20. Tess Baumann won in both horsemanship and reining on Sept. 20 against Oklahoma State while freshman Paige Benson was victorious in horsemanship against Auburn on Sept. 19.
Bailey Newlin's 75.3 scoring average in horsemanship ranks as a team-high for UT Martin while Baumann leads the Skyhawks with a 70.3 season scoring average in reining.
South Dakota State enters the matchup with an 0-2 record, falling 17-3 to No. 6 TCU on Sept. 26 and 13-7 to No. 3 Oklahoma State on Sept. 27. Despite the two setbacks, the Jackrabbits received a lift out of Jordan Gates and Cassandra Townsend as the duo earned ECAC Rider of the Week honors. Gates tallied MOP honors in horsemanship against Oklahoma State while Townsend went 2-0 in reining against the two ranked opponents.
Leaping into the NCEA top-10 standings this week was Delaware State, who boasts wins against SUNY New Paltz (9-2 on Sept. 28) and UC Davis (8-8 tiebreaker victory on Oct. 4) in 2019-20. Erin Gordon and Sydney Wicklund have each chalked up four Jumping Seat wins and one MOP while Zoe Kirsch has added a fences MOP. In the Western discipline, Blayne Bell and Grace Wilson have tallied a pair of wins for the Hornets.
