MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team accounted for three MOP's today as the Skyhawks produced a gritty 9-8 victory over South Dakota State at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex.
UT Martin's Western squad managed a 5-2 edge in scoring while the Jumping Seat representatives added four victories this afternoon. Abbie Hopkins (flat), Devon Woods (horsemanship) and Tess Baumann (reining) each picked up MOP honors for the Skyhawks.
In horsemanship, Woods' 74.5-point MOP performance led the way for UT Martin while Lucy Eier (73 points) and Paige Benson (71) also notched head-to-head victories. Bailey Newlin also accounted for a score of 73 points and settled for a draw against her opponent.
The Skyhawks tacked on three more victories in flat, paced by Hopkins' score of 77 which led her to MOP status. Quinn Reed earned a win after a 76-point showing while Kelby Kane also dialed up a victory with a 71-point effort.
Baumann guided UT Martin in reining as her 72.5 points were good enough for an MOP accolade. Emily Zegiestowsky also collected a win with 68 points while Noel Meadows and Hannah McDonald each tied their competitors with scores of 70 and 68.5 points, respectively.
Another Skyhawk victory occurred in fences, as Grace Rogers picked up her first win of the season with a 72-point ride. Savannah Metheny also put together a team-high 82-point performance but ran into some tough luck as she was matched up against South Dakota State's Claire Garduno (MOP ride of 83 points).
UT Martin faces a quick turnaround as it will complete its matchup against No. 10 Delaware State tomorrow at 9 a.m.
