MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin football team was recognized as the STATS FCS Team of the Week after an impressive road victory at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.
The Skyhawks (3-2, 2-0 OVC) recorded arguably their biggest win of the season by notching their first road victory of the season while leaving victorious from Roy Kidd Stadium for just the third time in program history.
UT Martin remained unbeaten in Ohio Valley Conference play with a strong showing in every phase of the game. The Skyhawks would pound the ball on the ground, tallying a season-high 234 rushing yards and four touchdowns in the game. On defense, UT Martin would limit a squad which entered the game averaging 243.8 rushing yards per game to just 94 yards on the ground, ranking as the third time the Skyhawks have held its opponent to less than 100 rushing yards this season. Then on special teams, the Skyhawks converted their lone field goal attempt from 22 yards while Terry Williams returned a punt 71 yards to set up a scoring drive.
Highlighting the game individually was junior running back Peyton Logan who tallied 13 carries for 112 yards and a touchdown. As a whole, the quartet of Logan, Lamarcus Young, Jaimiee Bowe and John Bachus III each tallied rushing touchdowns. Meanwhile, junior safety Takeem Young paced the team with nine tackles while the squad recorded five sacks – including a strip sack by Austin Pickett which TJ Jefferson returned 44 yards for a touchdown to earned OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors. The Skyhawks would then cap off the game with an interception by Sherrod Pittman on the Colonels' final drive.
UT Martin will look to build upon the team's success with a road matchup at Tennessee Tech this week to open contention for the annual Sgt. York Trophy series. The Skyhawks boast the best record in the series, going 25-11 against in-state OVC foes since 2007.
